help with flywheel on an abf please

I've had a quick look around but can't find what i need to know.
My 020 gearbox has a small input shaft, and i'm trying to mate it to a 2.0 abf.
Problem 1: flywheel on the abf is too large, what are my choices, are there any smaller 16v ones that will fit or will an 8v one fit and will it affect how smooth the engine is?

once i know this i can then start worrying about the clutch.

Thanks in advance.

The flywheel mated to an 020 box is completely different to an ABF flywheel (since its mated to an 02A box, as standard), so you need to match the flywheel to the box. 8V and 16V flywheels are the same.

Thank you.
Any further help would be appreciated.

ive done this, dump the abf clutch/flywheel, it weighs a ton anyway. as already advised use clutch flywheel to suit g box. it bolts straight on.you may need performance type assy as i suspect a standard type may slip with the extra power.

Basically, the clutch for an 020 box is 'inside' the flywheel, while on an 02A box its the more regular arrangement.

Thanks again. Any advice on decent driveable upgrades would now be appreciated. Thank god for the help on here otherwise i'd be wasting so much time and money.

I used the lightened flywheel (and gearbox)from my old 1900 8v when I put in my ABF, the engine now picks up really well. If you've got the flywheel off anyway defintely try to get it lightened :D

as they said in the post a flywheel from 8V or 16V with 020 will fit.

but your gearbox will probably not hold for so long with the 16V engine.

the best thing to do is to mount the 02A Gearbox from passat etc.

Golf is the shit!

does anyone know where to get the special sockets needed to remove the clutch from the flywheel?

On the ABF??? Are they 12 spline? Are the bolts male or female head? If the bolts are female head 12 spline, then the tool is probably an M10 12 spline tool, to undo them. My VR6 had the same, (bolting the flywheel to the crank).

The answer's the same anyway - go to Halfords, they'll probably have a special socket which will do the job. Get a tool from their Professional range, and its guaranteed for life.

The socket is just a standard 8mm bi hex (12 point).

Hope this helps.
And i've opted for the lightened flywheel and uprated clutch option with a diesel gearbox (which i already had)
Lets hope it stands up to the 16v.
