has anyone attempted a V5 conversion into a Mk1?

As the tittle says,
i have been talking to a friend who had an idea of putting a V5 into a Mk2.
well seeing as i have a MK1 has anyone done it as i know it would be quite a rare conversion.

Is there a reason why its not common considering it has 170BHp out of the box and then not having to run a cat either surely the potential is there.

Any info would be brilliant.

Thanks guys
John

tricky fit then as it will be quite wide you could remove the chassis legs to create room and use the subframes from a mk2 mk3

Its the same work/effort as a VR6, but instead of 6 cylinders, you end up with 5. Some people consider 5 cyl engines as a mushy compromise, but Audi (and VW, with the T4 transporter) have shown they have a definite, if narrow, place in society. I believe Ford's sporty Focus also uses a 5 cyl motor, 2.5 litres or so? And there's sporty (!) Volvos too.

All things considered, VW came up with a pretty good engine design with the VR6 which meant the traditional barriers to FWD transverse 6 cyl were overcome, and lessened the need for 5 cyls to overcome the approx 2 litre limitation on a 4 cyl (due to smooth running issues, which can also be overcome at the expense of reviness, with a balancer shaft).

isnt the ford/volvo block a straight 5?the V5 golf/bora/passat engine is a proper narrow angle 5cylinder V based on the vr6 block so is actually quite narrow for the size of engine.

You could fit one to be different but for the effort involved youd be better off fitting a vr6 as there are more options for further tuning

VR5's have a tendency to gulp coolant. They have a bad leak which apparently is bar steward to fix.

Unlessthe engine is stupidly cheap then go with 1.8T, VR6, 16V, G60 etc.

V5 transplant

V5 if your talking about the 5 cyl v5 i just want to say the electrics are what you need to worry about as the v5 was built to order meaning every loom is unique tailored to the customers requirements! i used to work at a known vw dismantlers and we gave up the intention of repairing a fire damaged v5 due to vw wanting 10 grand for a new loom! we gave the car back to the customer wishing him luck! frightening yes but that dont mean youd have to go down that road these days as it was a new car back 7-8 yrs ago.
