The 16V servo thread has to be cut down, and use the clevis pin from the original servo. Here is a pic to illustrate everything:

From left to right are a 16V servo with original thread, another 16V servo with the thread cut down, and the original servo. I took measurements from the back of the servo to the end of the thread and its 97mm for the original and 107mm for the 16V version. You need to use the original clevis pin because it has a hole in it for the return spring. This pin is longer than the 16V version. If you were to drill a hole in the 16V clevis pin, then it would be in the wrong place, since its shorter.

For info, the plunger in the servo is in a markedly different place (the 16V one is much further in) which means that you need to use the matching master cylinder and servo together.

I spent the morning driving around parts stores buying brake pipe and researching T pieces. VW do it, its off a VW Beetle and the part number is 803 611 755. But its over ?15……..so I found that the part off a Mini, is the same, except its 3 times cheaper.

It doesn't fit that side. If it did fit, VW would have put it that side???

it was put on the nearside because they were left hand drive in the factory and when converted to right hand drive the kept the servo on the nearside!!!! so i thought i could fit a mk2 golf 16v servo on to my mk1 so it would improve the brakes..

You can swap the master cylinder and servo, but it would remain on the left hand side of the engine bay. The design and placement of other components in the engine bay means that the master cylinder, and its pipework, if mounted on the right hand side, would foul the inlet manifold. Some people have done it, by extensively modifying the placement of the master cylinder, and/or usually after an engine conversion which is not a like-for-like swap.

Sure, you could fit the master cylinder on the right hand side, but you'd be kicking yourself when you come to refit the engine!

i see!!!! ive heard that you can put just the master cylinder in on the offside out off a mk2 golf and it fits in place with a 1.8 gti 8v manifold.

If you ever get a chance, have a look at Trimsports RHD MK1 G60 rocco which has the servo etc on the drivers side but this car has a corrado bulk head, pedal box and no fire wall.

It can be done but be prepared to get the welder out.

so would you then bolt the std M/C to the 16v servo? or use the 16v item?

The plunger is in a completely different place, so you need to use the 16V master cylinder and servo together.

The bolt is straight, it doesn't bend 90 degrees at any stage.

One with the thread cut down…..I cut 10mm off the end of mine. I know that the Mk2 Golf GTI 16V servo fits, its possible that similar servos from other VW models (eg. Passat, others) also fit but I've never seen a definative list.

so i have to cut the thread down by 10 mm and use which fork on the end the old one or the 16v one

did anyone read golf + this month? theres a top tip in there saying to use 2 e30 reservoirs instead… apparently that works just as well as doing the whole 16 servo swap! and a lot less hastle

cut 16V servo down, and use the Mk1 Fork and return spring :)

What's so special about the E30 reservoirs?
