1.8 20v T

Had a look through the forum via the search engine but can't find any information on the 1.8 20v T engine conversions.  Do these fit a Mk1 engine bay or is there not enough space?? are they the way to go and are the companies who will actually fit the engines or is it a DIY job??  Assume these are quick when working correctly!!! :dontknow:

Can be done and seems to be the "in" thing to do at the moment.

Not cheap and not an easy conversion but there is enough room. If you need some info try the PVW website there is lots on there.

Hope this helps

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

You can probably pick up everything you need for about ?1500 - ?2000 and fit it yourself, but, the fact you have asked this question shows you need to do a serious amount of research! there are around 40 different variants of the 1.8 20vT, each with different benefits, EG. drive by wire or cable throttle - If you go drive by wire, you need to get everything including the accelerator pedal from the donor car!
The ClubGti forum has some good info on this and there is even a guide to tell you which engine codes have which bits on them AND which cars they came in.

There are companies out there (Designa Dubs for one I believe) who will supply and fit the engine for about ?4500.

Not cheap!

There's a fairly complete 'how to' in a performance vw I've got! didn't look too difficult to do, but the wiring loom they had was ?1000 if memory serves me right

Shudder ECU's  I avoid them where possible. My dads doing a TDi transplant into his camper he's having a mere. :tlc:

Thats a lot of money for a conversion on a MK1 if you ask me.

What about a PD diesel lump? :dontknow:

You reckon that would be easier? :?

You'd need to change pretty much everything then. May as well have goen 20VT as it's far easier!  :?

A friend of mine has done a 1.8 20v T conversion on a MK1, and I sat in the passenger seat round Snetterton 8)  I think the original lump was from an S3 and it was not a cheap job, the power of the car was literally phenomenal   from 70mph to way off the clock in the space of 3-4 secs.

Why would it be any more dificult than a 20v t conversion? Benifits of all that torque and imagine the MPG in a mk1 8) . Cheap to get performance gains through chipping. Sounds good to me

This is probably a heresey

its a ncie idea as a fantasy but inreality im not sure id fancy a mk1 with that much power, they werent ever designed for it sounds a bit hairy for me

( must be an age thing)

the chassis and brakes will need some serious uprating and A cage woulde be a good idea, itd have tp be almost race spec i would have thought and itd be horrible on the road

Ive always fancied the 1.9 conversion in mine , with 256 mm disks eibach arbs and a boge kit already it would be a nice torquey point to point machine

keeps the cars character but with a bit more oomph

can see why your tempted though
