Mk1 Golf GTI Downpipe questions

Hi All

I have a question for you GTI owners. I am looking to get the downpipe 6 bolt flange type re made for GTI mdoels. We do currently stock one but the quality of what is available is not the greatest.

The supplier we are looking at has an option to do it in stainless. So my question being would you rather a decent copy of the original in stainless or mild steel? What would you be prepared to pay for an original downpipe in stainless?

I personally would prefer it in stainless.

As far as price goes around the £150 - 200 mark seems about the going rate, others may disagree.

I would stick with mild steel as your only replicating.
The down pipe is the last part of the exhaust which corrodes as its the fastest part to heat up.
Also with the early 6 bolt type there is no flexibility in the exhaust when the engine is twisting under acceleration / deceleration (which is why they changed to the later spring clip type) Stainless is more prone to work hardening and cracking and this lack of flexibility with the early type flange may induce fracturing prematurely.
I'd be happy to be proved wrong mind!
