I currently have no speakers in my mk1 so got myself a pair of 4x6 Pioneer TS-P462 plate speakers for the front, but as my door cards don't have the speaker pods/pockets i'm not sure where i could mount them without cutting into my door cards, suggestions anyone??
also going to mount some speakers in a parcel shelf (don't worry though i'm not butchering an original shelf, making my own )
looking at getting some 6.5" components with separate tweeters so can put the 6.5"s in the parcel shelf, and mount the tweeters in the shelf supports where the original speakers are
can anyone recommend a decent set?
been looking at Focal Performance PS165's, read good reviews about them, does anyone have any experience with them?
Cheers

As mk1 door cards are so simple, I'd be tempted to either make a pair, or get some spares that don't "matter" and build your components into them.
It's not just "how you do things" but also MUCH nicer having the main soundstage up front and the rears just giving fill to cover road/wind noise etc.
There'd be little benefit (except for the improved crossovers) in putting components in the back, rather than using coaxils.

now just need to decide whether to cut mine up or find some others, mine aren't the best of condition anyway…
it's a good point though as i spend all of the time upfront
I don't suppose you know the size of the depth behind the door cards though if i were to mount speakers in them?

i've got some 4x6 pioneer ts-p462's as i read good reviews and i found a brand new set cheap on ebay, they're plate speakers so have separate driver and tweeter, a bit like components, Infinity Kappa's are the same and good too, but these are both usually hard to get hold of in the UK
hope that helps

personally i will be going down the "quality" 6x4 in standard pods and an underseat subwoofer when i get mine back on the road.
modern cars generally have much bigger and stiffer door cavities and often a hidden sub meaning even upgrading the speakers will not produce the audio quality in a modern bog standard car.

If your door cards aren't the best, I wouldn't worry about chopping them - especaially if they're a "common" pattern.
Could you retrofit speaker pods from a late cabby? Or a mk2? (both of these would be 5 1/4" rather than 6 1/2", but would look the most original - You'd have to measure the mk2 idea up to see if it'd fit!)
Spotted these which are designed for use on a flat surface - just a thought:

oh yeah forgot about those, do you know how sturdy they are though? wouldn't want them to rattle with a decent speaker in them or anything.
i did think about mk2 one's but mk2 door cards aren't flat are they? so would be a bit more difficult.
yeah Rob suggested kick pods, those look pretty simple too, i think if i cant find a better easier way then i might have a go at making some simple ones to fit on the door cards
i might look into getting some late cabby ones though if i can reinforce them and get them to fit securely
