Red grille surround...on the cheap!

Hi guys… really wanting to paint my grill surround on my golf. Currently it is the standard polished metal but i really want a red one, unfortunately have pretty much no money so cannot afford a new surround.
So… my plan is just to paint it but i want to do it properly. I've been told that my trim surround doesn't clip out from the grille so i'm going to do it all whilst on the car.
I've been looking at these  http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_219298_langId_-1_categoryId_165505#dtab and wondered would that work? It's got primer and paint and laquer included.
OR would i be better off some how sectioning off the grill from the trim (newspaper?) and then getting the acid etch primer spray and some mars red aerosole spray? I'm not sure if this would get messy as i reallly don't want to mess the grill up.
Any advice/tips?  :dontknow:

cheers guys!

All trim clips off the grilles mate! Remove the whole grille from the car and look at the back side of it.  It has bent metal tabs that clip around the plastic grille.  your best bet would be to ask anyone on here if they wanted to swap there red one for your chrome one! I know I would of a few months back but was struggling so I just bought some chrome stuff instead

Mmm - it's a Citi Golf so sort of has a Mk2 grill but it seems (at least from the outside) that the surround is fized in with the grill… :(

Reckon just masking tape off the grille? would it work?
And would you go touch up pens or acid etch and spray can?

mask it all up well and spray it just take your time with prepping it and all will be well. using the touch up kit will just be really fiddly and quite possibly look crap after i reckon.

just take your time with it get it off the car and give it a rub down with some real fine sandpaper then a real good clean and mask it up. go slow with the spraying and don't get impatient and poke it to check if its dry    2 or 3 coats and you should be laughing

Good luck.

Certainly makes it easier if you can remove the trim from the grille.  :P
