Mk1 style crimes - list 'em here...

Post

I get so tired of seeing so many mk1's modified in a tasteless way, and thought I'd open up the debate for all to share. I'll start the ball rolling with one. Hopefully, getting these out in the open may start to deter the crimes against Mk1's from recurring. Let's have some fun…

PS. Photos help us all appreciate the style crimes better.

So, first up will be chrome bumpers on anything later than 1978. They look wrong - STOP IT!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder though mate !!

For me I don't mind as long as another mk1 is being kept on the road !!

Th bumpers are ok as long as the wing holes are filled, smoothed and painted

Ade

Mine will give you a good place too start,Hopefully you won't get too offended
All the mods done over thirty years ago. In my opinion they set mine apart from all the rest and have dated well
Must have cost the original owner more than what he  bought the car for lol.
The only thing I've never liked is the interior and have finally booked it in for a full retrim which is going in on Monday .( going retro )
List of mods might not be 100 per cent accurate but here goes.
Full zender q7 wide kit
Compomotive split alloys
Janspeed turbo conversion
Big I.C.E install proper old school
Remote central locking
Electric windows
Adjustable suspension
Original ripspeed exhaust (before they became halfords).

I do call mine the marmite car you either love it or hate it
Cheers

Back in '05/06 there were a couple if really radical cabriolets that showed at DubFreeze. An orange one and a red one - if I remember correctly.
They were definitely a case of Marmite. About as far from my standard as you could get sitting next to each other!!

Nifty - Period modded cars such as yours have their own place in the history books and these early mods needs to be preserved!

I don't understand the smooth bay look.  Why would you want to cut off your chassis number and blank off your heater intake?

Cue torrent of abuse!………….

I personally LOVE the chrome bumpers. Infact I am a sucker for chrome anything… I dont see how they look wrong?! The only noticable exterior difference with S1 and S2 are the small lights.

Not a fan of the clipper kits or crystal lights, as well as debadging and smoothing the boot lock, along with any modifications that scream modern, like fancy head units.

But IMO as long as you (and the chicks;)) like it, thats all that counts.

I did the front wiper conversion, and apart from it being totally useless, it didn't look that great either. So took it off and upgraded the wiper motor to a mk2 one. Much better mod, looks standard but actually goes fast enough to clear the rain off the windscreen. Spot on.
Also aftermarket window winders are also useless and look bad, another thing I have done and then rebought standard ones and replaced. The list goes on. I am learning the hard way. Should I even mention the bonnet scoop?

This is heating up nicely!

I wish more owners would start to realise their increasing rarity and start to treat them differently. Mk1's are a rare sight on our roads now, and the various differences between models should be preserved better. Plus, the majority of the mods are for an aesthetic appeal, which in actual purpose are worse than the original. As for making series 2's look like series 1's… Why? The differences are really just academic.

I'm going to vote for a name change to the mk1 Golf preservation club. Haha! It may just discourage all these expensive and unnecessary mods on what is now a classic car.

Where you having it re-trimmed?  Have a look at my post regarding re-trimming, there were a few very good recommendations.
Yes my Gti was the one that was up or good money but its straight, well looked after and most of all black with no sunroof which was exactly what i was looking for.

I am after a black series 1 Gti now with low miles to make exceptionaly nice so if you do here of any do let me know wont you…

Is yours a Gti?
