It is with reluctance that I am offering for sale my 1980 mars red Mark 1 Golf GTI, registration No. LKE 266V.

I purchased this car in November 1993 at which time it had covered 49000 miles. Today the mileage is only 69000.

The original owner, who was a keen Porsche enthusiast, was drawn by the hype of the GTI at the time and flew out to Germany to check on the full specification before he placed an order through a Volkswagen garage in London.

This car was ordered with the full German specification which included a 5-speed gear box and a steel sliding sunroof. Other extras were added by VW in Germany or by the London dealer; these being Tarrox disc brakes and pads, gold/silver Mahle BBS alloy wheels, twin headlamp grille, Bilstein Sports suspension and Blaupunkt autoradio, tinted glass and the very early bar-type seat belt mechanism. You can tell it is an early model as the radiator does not have a header tank and it has the small rear light cluster.

Since owning the car it has won many cups and rosettes at various Golf meetings. It was featured on ?The Used Car Roadshow? in 2007 and Jason Dawe, the presenter with Penny Mallory, said he had never ever seen a Golf like it in its present condition.

It was featured in VW Motoring Magazine in November 1998, The Golf in August 2003 and Rabbit, Club GTI Magazine, in 2005 ? Issue 77.

The car is taxed to November 2008 and M0T expires in June 2008.

The asking price for this unique vehicle is ?10,000.

This car would appeal to a collector who would maintain it in its present condition; therefore only serious buyers need apply.

There you go Mal you lazy sod!

Personally, I wouldnt buy this for ?10k even if I had the money

Looks like it may havehad some paint work (fron VIN looks painted over), dont like the spoiler and I wwould want the original wheels and at least the rocker cover painted black!

I'd say ?6-?7k is fair.

Beautiful car.  I couldn't bring myself to spend 10k on it though.  If I had spent that much on a Mk1 I wouldn't be able to use it the way it was intended to be used.

Originality is worth something but for 10k I'm sure you could buy a nice series 1 and make it nicer plus still have enough left over to buy, I dunno, a couple of corrado VR6's and a holiday somewhere hot…

I'd say ?4000-5000 is a realistic selling (trade at) price, that's assuming its mint as in the pics. Obviously you'd set a "for sale" price higher, to give yourself room to maneouvre - so advertise at ?5750?

if it is totaly mint, i'd say yes.
trouble is that you can get a very very good one for ?4,000. i'd not be able to keep it totaly original either. that sort of car, to me, needs to stay original. hate the wheels too.

I love the wheels, and the painted plate on the slam is not the vin.

Tho 10K is a lot of wonga to spend out on a mk1 no matter how mint.

Would rather a 5k mk 1 and another car to boot.

10K.. Why, cos its got low miles???

whats the point in having that when its not been used/wont get used, I'd rather stick with 1500 GTi with 173K on the clock and drive it how i want too..

Unless money is no object and someone buys it to put it in a musuem… But why  :banghead:

 But why  :banghead:

If every mk1 in the world was driven/used as daily's etc, there would be no original minters left for us to appreciate.

You can't pay 5k+ for a mk1 and use it like a 2k car. Because it will just end up being one.

But i do agree its expensive especially if its had paint, having paint dosn't make a minter but a lot of people tend to think it does.

biased as only use as weekend car, but I wouldnt pay 10k for that car.

Would have concerns over top mounts, look like they need to be replaced. Not a big problem but could also indicate dampers and other wear and tear items may need replacing soonish.

i thought that, but ive opened the pic in photoshop and got a good zoom on it - it appears to be a badge unless he is very apt at shadow painting.

I do really like the car but i would be so worried about it getting scratched or a stone chip or paint fade etc i just couldnt have it!

I dont think its worth ?10k, i would of said more like ?5K.

All the spiel about it was ordered from london with this extra and that extra, well, every car was ordered from a dealer and most were ordered with extras to the customers taste, doesnt make it a historical and rare car.

The only things that are making this car more expensive as far as I can see is the mileage, number of previous owners and it has full history - which are good things but i dont think that justifys the ?10k price tag, thing is, some muppet will pay that for it tho…. and you know they will come on here in a few months and say 'hi im new, this is my car, i paid ?10k for it, isnt it great?'

10k is way off the mark……..especially for a non standard car, too many add ons and extras detract from its originality and appeal for me, if its had paint it dont matter as long as its good paint! and not hiding anything

if it was sat there on someones drive completely original with a bit of dust and dirt on it its gotta be worth 5k all day long, its possibly too "perfect" :dontknow:  and those wheels although on the right car would look good, but dont suit that one imo, neither does the spoiler or later stereo and mats, sure there easy to change but it just looks a bit "boyed up" you cant guild a lilly!

The car is not a mint unrestored example which would command top dollar. The car has been resprayed, the tailgate painted gloss black and should be on single headlights.

Is it worth 10k? I would say yes, even though its been tarted up a little. The Golf mk1 values have been far too low for years given all the hard work, money and time you have to put in to keep them on the road. Looks a snip if you compare the values to mk1 ford escorts. I believe mint Ford mk1 escorts RS1600s can command up to 30k.
