chroming price?

I switching from s2 plastic bumpers to s1 metal bumpers. I am most likely going to purchase some steel repro,s from crazy quiffs or alike. Now of course there just steel and are going to need painting/chroming. I would prefer chrome myself so I sent a price query to a couple of chroming companies in my area. And have received an email back from one company…

Now I understand that chroming wouldn't be cheep Only (TOTAL: £395 + P&P + vat and Insurances if required.)  Seems expensive given the parts are brand new with no corrosion/ pitting ect. minimal prep work if any??

I'm wondering what you guys think?

Cheers
Gav.

As they are new you think no prep but for chroming it's all the same. They dip, clean and plate. 3 stage is the best, copper then zinc(I think) then chrome.

I've been looking at it and it is expensive. I've heard of a place here in Ireland that do hardened chrome for hydraulic shafts but they'll do motorbike bits too so I'm going to try them.
It's crap but that seems to be the price.

There is OE rears on German eBay for same price as crazy quiff.

I had a pair if headlight housings on my beach buggy done for £80 by Castle Chrome in Dudley. They did an amazing job but chrome plating is very expensive. If you haven't contacted Castle Chrome already, give them a try.

Yes 3 stages is what they mentioned,  I didnt think it was going to be peanuts like… Somehow I had imagined around the 250-300.
I like the sound of hardened chrome place you may have found especially If they like to deal with motor enthusiast.
would be good just too get a few quotes at least.

Its just a crying shame there isn't a way, or at least to my knowledge? of clear coating  polished steel.   That would just be too easy I guess Lol

Its looking like that might have to happen :)

See I'm really just fishing to see if I can find a local place I could send other parts too in the future for reasonable price.
Guess you get what you pay for… I have seen some on German ebay for less (thanks to the guy above) But my translator was playing up so could gather too much info from zee German dizcription.

How good is the chrome on the VW heritage ones? I've read everything from brilliant to finding rust after less than a year on the triple chromed ones.

Anyone have first hand experience?

Having my series 1 bumpers re-chromed at the moment and straightened out.  I've been quoted £250 for the re-chroming and £30 an hour for the straightening out.
Yep , i'd buy the triple plated ones from heritage.

Now that seems more like it!  Interesting how you got a a nice quote seen as you are needing (Re-chrome) presumably that involves removing the old chrome first amongst other processes.
Maybe one less step needed for myself thus bringing the price down further or am I missing something again?

Chroming is too expensive in the UK and find that the finish provided by lots of places cannot guarantee the durability due to the weather we have here….This is my opinion…Reason is that I had my wheels chromed in California in 2007 and had them on my car until September 2011 and never had any issues at all.The place that done them done a 7 stage process and guaranteed them whatever and it was a fraction of what it cost here, even with shipping back !!…

As funk-star said, easier to buy them already done than spending again on top.

Wow those do look sweet as!  Interesting stuff!  Although it is easy to buy some from the heritage, I am keen to have a couple of choice parts chromed also, and so I just used the bumpers really to test relative prices. As for bumpers  I'm talking to a local fabricator atm  about some aluminium/stainless ones for cheepish…

Thanks fellas!
