Is my car worth the agreed value I've asked for??? Insurer thinks excessive!!!

Post

Hello boys n gals I requested an agreed value of my car but the insurer thinks its excessive. My question is am I asking too much? If not how do I get them to agree.

I don't think its excessive at £3700, in fact I'd probably like more but I know its only a 1990 golf gti convertible

I bought the car mid 2010 for £1700

The car has had the following restoration done, new bonnet, drivers wing + door and repainted (due to rust) about £800 (sept 2010)
Replaced the brake system, everything bar the master cylinder and servo at £400
Kenwood cd mp3 player with steering wheel control £120
Refurbished bbs rz alloys + new toyo proxes £450
New mohair hood in blue £600 fitted
Custom leather interior, seats, dash, knee bar, headliner and pillars + new luxury carpets and replacement parcel shelf £1700

Its always a hard one as it doesn't have anything to do with what you have spent on it. You could have spent £10k and it still will be worth the going rate.

I don't think your value is excessive, I guess that the insurers value will be nearer the £3k ?

If I was not happy with my cars value, I would search the classifieds for cars like mine and send them all the links to give them the going rate of similar cars.

You will need to prove its value so get as much info as possible in cars for sake, mk1 price guides etc and send it to them.

At the end of the day if your not happy, just leave them and go elsewhere !!

I would say is us excessive

I have not seen a cabriolet other than a sportline or a rivage sell for that money unless its a low miler and low owner standard car

Just my opinion

You would surely get away with 3k with the insurance company

Its hard unless you can find adverts to back it up for cabriolets of simmilar spec for £3700 plus advertised, but again no none will know what they actually sell for.

Have a look at my clipper link below, i got a £3500 valuation on that fine.

Who is the insurance company?

Adrian flux

I was with footman James before for 4 years.

Looks like I will be changing when the time comes.

I know others with similar spec fetch around 3k. I don't think I'm being unreasonable, especially with the one off interior.

I have forwarded the cab buying guide and a few adverts to them by email so I guess see what happens.

I think you're around the mark maybe a little high but you know all the work you've put in and the associated expense where as I, and the insurer, don't!
Keep at them and push for your value! It's your car, if your paying them, for what I hope is only a piece of paper (and not have to claim) the least they can do is agree to replace it all should the worst happen! Surely that's the idea of insurance is it not? Lol! On a random side note, would you mind sharing where you got your luxury carpet from? Pm if you would as to keep on topic! Cheers

My carpets were done by http://www.bielawskissheffieldtrimming.co.uk/

The interior was made by someone I know who works for TVR making the interiors there

Beilawskiss also did my roof

I've closely read all the comments on this post and I am certainly no fan of Insurance Companies but that said.

As an X Car Salesman (written a few comments on this before) your just a little to emotional about what you have spent on your pride and joy.

It doesn't matter to the Insurer in the same way it does to you my friend, fact of life.  :P

If your not happy, shop around and shop hard.

Just think if we were to add up all the hours we spend on our cars and then tried to insure them?
I've only had mine 18 months what I'd be asking for a total write off value of +30K and mine is Standard!

Shoot for the Stars but be happy with the Moon!

Off topic slightly, love your yellow inner lights, are they yellow or did you tint them? - if so what did you use?

not to sure on how these things work but adrian flux have put my value to 10k on my insurance quote and they are saying that the agreed value is done after i sign up i dont like the sound of that.
i cannot send any links to cars for sale that are the same spec as the car is completely restored inside out and underneath with basically a bora tdi running gear all round which has not been completed by anyone else so far. (to my knowledge)

I had a similar issue although my car is completely standard.

Mine is agreed at 4k. My original estimate was more but they too thought it was excessive.

I collected various adverts of standard, original cars and sent off a cover letter explaining why I thought it was worth 4k.

They agreed.

It's like they say, you never get back what you put into it. Yes it has a one off interior but it doesn't bump up its value - if anything, some might say it lowers it.

You need to find adverts of other modified Golfs to back up your estimate.

If I was expecting to get back what I have put into it I'd be asking 6k I have spent a lot besides the above.

I have had a response from Adrian Flux and they have accepted £3700. The buying guide and adverts I sent them must have helped. My reasoning for the agreed valuation is so I can replace the car if anything did happen, I mean lets face it no car comes just as you like it. You have to put the work in to make it your own. What's insurance for at the end of the day? If it was building or contents it would be built better and items replaced with new, should be the same with car insurance but just seem to get a raw deal if the worse should happen

I know the modifications are not everyone's cup of tea but the majority of people seem to prefer this car to my original 83 GLI
