any advice?

Evening all.

I am just reaching the end of my mk1 build. Its a Mars red 1272cc with the more reliable weber conversion. It has red and black gti interior. 14" bbs ra wheels. Its has the mk2 gti front brake conversion. A momo leather race 300mm steering wheel. And a stainless steel 4-2-1 exhaust manifold. Its had a fully rebuild 1272cc gf series engine and in the summer i plan to get rear arches put into it and a half respray. (below the black plastic trim) ohhh and it has super sport coilovers aswell..

I am 20 year old and have just got my 3rd full year of no claims discount and i have pass plus.

So what i am asking for here is maybe a little bit of guidance to what to state and what to avoid to my insurance company. And how to word things. Obviously if i go in there and say 'it has height adjustable coilover suspesion on it' they will laugh at me or give me a ridiculous premium.

Any advice?
Cheers
Matt

Just declare the mods. Some insurers won't cover ANY mods, some don't mind mods but would penalise you heavily, or not cover, an engine conversion - so you're okay, since its mechanically the same etc. Don't forget to mention the brakes and all the little bits, but I'd be surprised if they increased a premium for the things like steerin wheel change.

They will probably also ask you the amount of the suspension lowering. Ask if there's a difference for different heights, since if it were cheaper eg -35mm than -50mm, you could raise it a little bit? 15mm would make SFA difference, after all.

Thanks very much for that. Is there any insurance company that you would advise?

excelent. i have just phoned my own insurance company, they were happy to insure the coilovers as 'after market suspension' and the alloys aswell. and steering wheel wont be a problem they said, and i wasnt brave enough to tell them the rest. so i will blag the calipers and discs as 'i didnt know they were uprated' and the manifold will get stated in a couple of month. thanks for your help.

Surely they will kill me for them thou wont they? And one question will lead to another one. I know i should be honest. But i have had 3years of driving now and havnt had one crash. And they still continue to put my insurance premium through the roof.

I declare all my mods and pay the extra, why should someone else get away with it?

If you think they'll not check over the car and find the upgrades, in the event of a serious accident and subsequent claim, then you must be born yesterday!!! Also, insurance companies can and DO check around on forums, etc……not declaring mods is nothing less than fraudulent, and people have found themselves in very hot water for it, like insurance companies countersuing them if there is a massive accident and payout (eg for injury, death, etc).

Think it over.
