Rivage GTI 1.8l k-jet engine

Desperately want to get my golf running and the local mechanic has just given up on it after having it in his garage for over a year 😡
Its had alot of work done but still doesnt run. Last I knew, at best it starts up, smokes then cuts out. He seems to think it may be a metering head/mixture problem.
The brakes and handbrake no longer work also making moving it around abit trickier.

Fed up and just want it sorting by someone who knows what they are doing. Any help greatly appreciated

This is the car I picked my wife up on our first date 13 years ago and would love to take my 2 daughters out in it who have only ever seen it in the garage under a cover  😢

Spent all wkend cleaning it and she does come up very well

Sorry can't be any help with recommended a garage but just wanted to say, wow it does come up nicely with some cleaning and looks very solid, has it been painted/restored before?

Strange both the hand brake and foot brake not working very well, I can understand the foot brake not working that well as there is no vacuum from the engine to power the servo but the hand brake is just a cable?

Fingers crossed you find some one to help as these are simple cars compared to modern stuff but a lot a garages rely on a computer to tell them what's wrong so the art of fault finding is becoming a lost art.

Has your local garage given you a list of what they have done?

They need to start with compression test then engine timing then fuelling/ air intake. If they can get it ticking over then onto fuel pressure.

Maybe post up a few pictures of the engine bay in case we can see something wrong….

Keep going as it will be worth it in the end.

Hi mark
Great to hear from you, you helped me a great deal afew years ago trying to get this back on the road before I decided to trust a local mechanic.
It's not been painted to my knowledge and I have owned it 16 years now. It doesnt look like it has. Its be no means perfect I know every dint scratch and rust spot on it as I'm sure you do your own lol. The hood is water tight but afew snags that let it down aesthetically. The alloys need a refurb and will defo need 4 new tyres. I didnt know the foot brake was linked to the engine so that's made me feel better. The handbrake like you say is nothing really.
The list of jobs its had done is endless. Main ones are 2 new fuel pumps and filter. Full head gasket seal replacement inc stem valves. Skimmed head. New timing belt and timing. New parts for all water and oil system. All ht leads sparks dizzy cap etc changed.
I will take a foto of the engine bay at the first opportunity. Been out onto a mechanic who specializes in VWs, going to go speak to him tmoro.

300,000 miles and counting … I salute you 👏🤣
