Wiper mechanism spacers and seals...

Post

Hi guys,

So after driving my new 1983 3 door tin top for a few weeks now, I've found a couple of issues.
The heater fan was seized so replaced with a new fan / motor at the weekend.
When I finally got the old one out, by removing the wiper mechanism, it looks like the passenger wiper spindle seal was leaking water past the seal onto the motor , hence the seized fan.
Has anyone got an image of how and what order all the seals and spacers go back in, as it seems a previous owner has removed it at some point and not put it back correctly or missed off a seal?
I know there's plenty of technical drawings on the web but it doesn't show what is below the body and what is above. Also an actual image will make more sense to me.

There was also quite a bit of water in the passenger footwell so I'm guessing this was the route cause. But I'll wait to see on that one.

many thanks in advance

Andy

This is always helpful www.oemepc.com/vw/
Find your car and year, you might find it under body.

link to wiper arm.

12, 5, 8, 10 above the body, 8 underneath.

So there is only 1 washer underneath the body, the rest is fitted on top.

New seals.

Is the water inside the car rain water or coolant?

If coolant check the heater matrix.

If rain water check the rubber drain guides in the scuttle area are not blocked, windscreen seal, holes in scuttle area, missing or broken scuttle cover, rain water running along cables eg. aerial wire and working it's way into the car, missing plastic membrane behind door cards.

Check the fuse box as it's common problem for water to get into it and destroy the insides and all sorts of electrical problems.

You need to try and find where the water is getting in, best remove the carpets and work out which direction the water is coming from.

Thanks guys.
Yes its rain water.
The heater blower fan was seized, so my guess it was leaking from the wiper hole directly above and finding its way through the heater matrix into the passenger floor well.
But I think carpets out will be a good shout. Then definitely know for sure..
Checked the scuttle area, all looks clear. Fuse box looks in decent condition, dropped it out and checked behind. No issues.
Not had the door card off.

Which is the bay item on the drawing? No 10?
Thanks again

Andy

The seal is No 10.

Vw part number if you cross reference the part numbers on the zap 7 web site.

Check what’s fitted to your car though as I’ve not taken mine out on the Mk1 golf only on my Mk1 Scirocco which had that seal around the hole where the wiper spindle pokes through the hole and nicci21paul thinks there may not be one?

Thanks guys.
Anyone know what the part number is for the gear selector shaft seal is? Tried VW heritage but no joy.
They do one for 1.5 -1.6! Will this fit the 1.3?
Thanks again in advance
