Hi all,
Any advise or instructions on how to remove / install the windscreen and rear quarter windows safely? What tools are required?
Thanks

Removal is quite easy, although seems wrong!
You basically push them out! Rear quarters are easier. Lie on the back seat, put your feet on the glass, evenly spaced (so not right in the middle) and push. Make sure you have an assistant ready to catch the glass! If you can, try and slide something under the screen seal on the inside just to loosen it - it will go back to where it was, but you'll have broken any adhesion that can occur over time. Windscreen is the same, but harder to find the right position in the car to push.I'll warn you now, it takes some pushing! I've done the above a few times on various old cars, and never broken glass.

Re-fitting is a faff - good post here: https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=mk1-golf-chat_2%2Ffitting-windscreen
I wouldn't use washing up liquid as a lube as it contains salts that can cause rust. KY as mentioned, or silicone lube (for plumbing fittings). Rear qtr is same process (but easier!).

I have found on older cars that if you can get the seal lifted a bit off the glass and metal, then spray wd-40 around the seal to metal and glass to seal, they tend to be easier to remove.

and the feet method works on non-glued in glass, as in older Cabriolets and such, but over hear with the start of the 90's cabbies, the front windscreens are glued in so you have to use the saw or take it to a glass shop to have it removed.

Windscreen and rear quarter window removal / installation

I have a yellow hella relay under the bonnet which seems to be wired somehow to my aftermarket cobra immobiliser. The immobiliser keeps malfunctioning and will not allow me to start the car. If I jiggle the wires or the relay it starts??? Can anyone advise me please Regards Dean

windscreens are very fragile so you have to be extra careful if you're going to go the push out technique. sides and rear you can just boot out no problem.

if the windscreen seal is old I would just buy a new one and chop the old one for a 100% safe screen removal. what you do is cut the outside inner lip which holds the glass in place, once this is all removed you just lift the glass out of the seal then jobs a goodun.

for new seal go to Mark Carter at classic-vw.co.uk his are great quality oem style :)

I tired the push out foot method on my front screen, carefully peeled the seal back around the screen on the inside so break the seal, sat back and pushed…. crack went my screen as I pushed and I thought my feet were spread out across the screen but something went wrong…

Lucky I was removing the screen because I had a large stone chip and I was having a new screen fitted but I wanted to treat some rust underneath the seal so it was no real problem.

aye they are so fragile its just not worth the risk when a new screen seal is cheap, plus re-using old seals has a risk of water leaks as they often wont seal properly again when reused.

had this problem myself twice, 2nd time i had no choice to use an old seal since the new febi seal I bought was made incorrectly

The only issues that I have had over the many years of ownership, is that when they (Glass Shops) go to replace your window (windscreen) they nick the paint to the primer,,,, then go on with the replacement..without priming or re-sealing the paint.  Then new non-oem gaskets that aren't as wide on the frame after replacement. On my OEM 81 the gasket was wider than the "OEM-Like" replacement so it didn't overreach the sides like the OEM.  I said NO_NO_NO…..and bought a OEM from the Dealership and had the window reinstalled…..It never leaked or had rust develop.

I can't say the same for my 92 that has the glass replaced, as you can see that the width isn't the same as the overreach is Barely covering the channel on the "a" pillars, and the over reach on the windscreen wiper post is about 1/2 of what it was, thanks to me having a Wax line that I had made and the paint was a "different color" due to not being waxed.

Lastly some Glass shops and individuals don't take time to fully seat the new gasket, or lube it enough to get it to move about a bit to seal well……

For your immobilizer, I would replace the relay as it looks to be a Standard Bosch 40A, and then remake the connections from the wires to the relay as if you jiggle and it work, that is either the internals of the relay or one of the connections to it is flakier than a politician….

Thanks for the input everyone……agreed best to cut old seal in order to protect the glass and install a new seal to ensure its water tight. I will leave for now as the weather isn't great to mess around with it……

Yes cold weather or wet isn't the most opportune time to replace glass, a heated shop or garage and getting everything up to temp makes it easier and glass is less fragile at room temp than at freezing temps.
