Window scraper replacement..

Post

So I've just tried to fit 4 new external window scrapers on my MK1 Golf.
I got them from Classic VW as they came with the steel insert as per the originals but they just will not fit… Before I complain to classic VW, can anyone give me any pointers? I can see the locating tabs inside the door skin, but my seals seem too thick to fit and also not deep enough to sit far enough into the locating tab… If you follow me..
So right now, I've got a car I can't drive - it's pretty much my every day car so I need it sorting asap..
Thanks in advance,
Pete.

I just installed new ones on mine as well. I had to trim them to length before they would fit. They only catch the  mounting tabs inside the door by a few millimeters. I replaced all the seals and scrapers on both doors, it's a bit of a chore.

Thanks, I trimmed them all ok but the issue is seating them. They push down to the right depth as you look at the scraper from the outside - it sits flush along the top of the door edge, but there is nothing holding them in place.. All the clips are there but they are not holding the rubber at all.. so once I let go, they just fall off.. Not getting it at all

Well the ones I bought the rubbers had to be secured to the frames with 2 way thin sticky tape.

Yeah, I've seen something similar online but there was no sticky tape with these….

you need to ensure they fit inside the clips, whilst you pushing them down. sounds like youre missing the clip when installing… i've fitted loads, on mk1 and mk2 mostly from mark at classic vw.. always worked..for me.
I did how to! on mk2 forum and i think mark carter himself has done 1 also on here under name funkstar… or even contact him via face book.

Thanks, Briano has been on already.. They are lining up with the clips but they don't seem to be sitting in there correctly. I push down until the seal hits the door but once I release pressure, up they pop… It's as if the new rubbers are too thick for the clips and also not deep enough to seat into the clips.. I left it alone 'coz I was gonna smash something …

Old clips but if anything they seem too tight. The seals won't push down into them

I got mine from werk34.de, i don't know if that makes the difference. My went together relatively easy but I had replaced all the clips as well.

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated. I'm now thinking it's more to do with my lack of patience and fine motor skills..  :$
I'm gonna think about taking it to a local auto trimming place before I bend a seal or smash a door panel in.. Frustrating because on the face of it, it should be a simple job but they will not f*****g sit into place at all..
Many thanks…

On a side note if you carefully remove the inner scraper and then roll the window down, you should be able to see the clips and how they are grabbing onto the new scraper.  I have seen in the past that on one of my cabbies the original dead scrapers were clipping on to the rubber and the metal, but on the other side that came off in my hands easily, the scrapper was over the clip, and the clip being held fast.

I had ordered new clips and when I applied my new outer scrapers to the oem metal I glued them with a fine line of sillycone, (black) and allowed them to cure. using the new clips one at a time I inserted the new scraper and slightly pryed the clip to get the new scraper assembly to pass the clip lip.  I also used a bit of grease to ease them in.

On another cabby, the new rubbers were hardier and you totally removed the metal and the rubber slid in to and was held by the new clips quite firmly.

prying the dead out of the car.

Using the new tape to affix the scraper to the metal

New scraper held in place by the tape and the clips.

These were the older style that use the metal outer that you affixed the scraper to the old metal with two way stickie tape….same tape that you could use from a Window kit.

I can't remember exactly, but don't the clips push up on to the metal edge of the door (on the inside). Is it possible that you've pushed the clips down when trying to fit the trip to the clip? That would explain why the trim doesn't reach the clip. With the glass in I have no idea how you replace or push the clip back in place mind!

I've just done mine.
It's a tricky job,

I used a short block of wood, about 100mm long - placed  on top of the seal, then a sharp hit with a small hammer. The "tangs" on the clips can snap off so they don't work. Next time I will replace the clips first with new ones…

Good luck!

Well, I went into the garage today and used a bit of washing up liquid and a bit of patience and they're all fitted! Some of the clips were so tight I had to open them a tad but all seems ok now.. Thanks to everyone that took the time to offer advice - much appreciated..

I know that with new clips I had to slightly pry them, and well the old ones that I tightened the pinch, it either broke or it worked….but I too had to pry them a bit once I tightened them….

Glad you got it sorted.
