Which calipers/hubs do I have?

Post

I'm struggling to work out exactly what front calipers and hubs I have. The rubber sleeves on the slider pins have deteriorated and need replacing. Ideally I'd like to get a complete caliper repair kit that replaces all the rubber seals and bleed nipples etc but I'm not sure what to get. Looking on used mk1/2 calipers on ebay I can't seem to find anything that matches what I have. 20200921_105623.jpg

There is no difference between the Calipers on a Solid or Vented Golf/GTI.  The Vented rotors required a thinner pad, which you see when you look up the etka that the pads are different for the vented vs solid rotors.

You can use the Vented Rotor Pads on a Solid, but you will never get a Caliper to seat on a Solid Pad when you have vented rotors….

Over here on this side of the pond for quite a few years the parts stores all had the thicker pads listed for the Cabriolets, you had to get the 83 Rabbit GTI to select the vented rotors and the vented rotor pads.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Yeah that looks right. Makes sense since mine is a 1980 gls. The thing I'm confused about is whether the carrier (2) can be removed from the hub. I've seen different people say that mk1 carriers are cast on to the hub or that they can be removed. I thought it was only early mk2's that had the carrier actually cast on as part of the hub.. Looking at the diagram and the images above it looks like they can. be removed. However I haven't seen just the carriers for sale new or used anywhere which made me wonder whether they were actually removable or not.

I'm fairly certain the calipers themselves are fine and that I just need new rubber sleeve for the slider pins so either this

Or this if I want to replace all the seals, pistons and bleed nipples

If however I wanted to upgrade the front brakes to 256 or 280mm, would I be able to do so without having to get different hubs if the carrier can be removed?

They bolt to the spindle, not the hub.  The Hub is pressed in to the Spindle. OPppppsy the Wheel Bearing Housing.

I am old school to me they are spindles.
