Not sure where they are on a golf but year ago they used to be behind the wing on 205 gti,s. They are there to scrub the fines from the fuel breathers. Normally tucked up in the void between the inner and out wing.

Remove the inner fender wheel well cover.

You don't have it in uk cars, I've had both front wheel arch inner liners off and there's nothing there.
The pictures etc are America so slightly different from uk cars.

I have often wondered what various vacuum pipes disappear into the near side upper wheel arch for. Anything in there is well hidden and certainly not easy to gain access too.

You'd know if you had one because they make a constant tapping / clicking noise.

Well they do when they work

It is located in the left side passenger fender, you have to remove the outer inner fender flare to get access to it. same thing you remove to get access to the antenna.

Makes a noise?  I never hear it as I am usually driving my car topless tunes up and a smile on my face.

There is a thread on the vwvortex cabriolet section where someone rebuilt thiers to eliminate the fumes.
but the thread is devoid of photos thanks to pbucket.
I took apart the charcoal canister, put new charcoal in, and reassembled (pics) | VW Vortex - Volkswagen Forum

kind of read the headings of the photos.
