Lol. I'm total novice with the sizes. How would I measure them?

Measure the diameter of the threaded stud.

5mm = M5 etc etc.

Well I have a big box of nuts so I usually rummage to find one.

The ones look like m5x 125 but I would just take both off run to your favorite good old fashioned hardware store and get ones to fit…

If you told me what engine and what those parts are on, I could look them up… or you can too.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Thanks mate. Had a try to look myself but there's a lot of option to select from in regard to the engine. I have a 1.8 carburater 89 cabby.

I bought the following:

M6 (6mm) Hex Nut - Steel (Pack of 40) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07D2FL6W9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_vya2DbGHEHBRB

 M5 (5mm) Hex Nut - Steel (Pack of 40) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07BVX8QQ5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_jAa2Db8S40T2F

As the width of the screw or bolt was 5mm

What does the 1.25 mean?

Hi Optimus unless yours is somehow different to mine the the studs will be M6 x 1.0. I know you measured 5mm but if you you used a tape or a rule that won't give you an accurate measurement. You need to use a micrometer or vernier. The number after M6, 1.0 or 1.25 or whatever refers to the thread pitch. The pitch is the distance between two peaks on the thread. So M6x1.0 will be 6mm in diameter and have a 1mm distance between thread peaks.

Hey Steve that makes a lot of sense thank you for explaining that to me.

Admittedly I did use a ruler; out the two which one would you recommending buying micrometer or Vernier? Think it would defo be handy to have

Hey Optimus, micrometers are usually more expensive and usually only measure up to 25mm or so for a small one but they are really accurate that's why engineers use them. A vernier is less accurate but will be really close. They are cheap and measure up to 150mm or so.

Thank you to everyone who took the time out to reply - I managed to put a M6 1.0 on both and it's worked a treat!!!!
