What engine do I have???

Post

Hi All,

Just got my Mk1 project delivered and it is literally in pieces in multiple crates!

Was looking at one of the engines which have been delivered and have found the part number "027 103 021" stamped on the side. This one looks like it has been refurbed and has been painted up.

Does any one know what engine this is? I think it is a KR but would like someone else's opinion ?

I have had a Mk2 for some time, but with picking up someone elses project it is difficult to know for sure what is actually there.

The quantity of stuff I have recieved is silly! there is about 5 sets of everything from carbs to gearboxes to hubs

Hello mate, that's what I thought. Thanks for confirming. I now need to decide if I want to use this engine and do some head work or buy a mates 2.0 9a engine out of the Audi 80.

The audi engine has had some work done and so has the KR by the looks of it. With the KR I have a custom stainless manifold and bike carbs and loads of other bits for that engine.

I,m tempted to stick with the KR as I have a lot for it. But don't really know how much power I could squeeze out of it

when you think about engine power just try to think about your power to weight ratio - I watched someone on the Nürburgring testing a 1ltr UP! GTI with a multek tune and on the short sections / bends and turns it was blitzing past or behind much bigger cars - granted it got blown away on straights but thats not where its fun.

I was tempted when buying a MK1 to get one with a big engine but ended up getting one with the standard DX GTI engine and I am not disappointed.
even though mine is a more heavy cabby it's light and nimble, acceleration is great, once you get the hang of it you can fire it out of corners and it more than keeps up with the majority of boy racers and often catches people trying to get up behind me in speed limits off-guard when we exit the speed control area.
also because it's old + lowered on coil overs when you are doing 50 it feels like 100.

Yeah I get what you are saying mate, my mk2 8v GTi still feels nippy and amazing fun to drive down the country roads!

Just want a little more poke from the Mk1, hoping between 150 - 180bhp. Might be possible from the KR engine
