You don't need to change the water pump with the cam belt as the water pump is attached to front of the engine so access is easy and it's run from the alternator belt not the cam belt.

On modern cars the water pump is usually driven by the cam belt and is hidden behind the cam belt cover so it often it's changed at the same time as the are hard to get to.

You don't have to touch the cambelt when changing the water pump.

£30 for a Meyle a full water pump, don't buy the 1/2 water pump as the bolts are a pain to undo and often shear when separating the water pump from the housing.

Are you sure your VW garage know what they are doing or did someone behind a desk tell you a price as I think they have quote you a cambelt change for a later car…

Try and find a good recommended old school garage which does not relay on pluging in computers to find faults but have proper mechanics who can find faults with out just sticking on new bits……  Rant over….

Even better buy a haynes manual to do it your self, cam belt and new tensioner is about £35 in parts and takes about an hour…..

No worries, cambelt change at a garage depending on where in the country you are is about £80 ish including parts.

Are you having problems with over heating etc?
If not I would leave the water pump alone, mine lasted 26 years and 260,000 miles but I change my coolant every 3 years.

Well if you buy a new one it doesn't hurt to remove the bolts one at a time, and use never-seize on the threads and replace and re-torque to 87 in/lbs.  After you do the last one Spray the rear of the bolts with Battery anti-corrosion paint…. That way you can separate the wp off the housing in the future.

Briano1234, changing your water pump looks a lot harder than UK cars without air con and power steering, you only have to remove the alternator and belt to gain access to the 4 bolts.

Wet and windy in the UK… so a little jealous…

At least the water pumps on these cars are pretty bomb proof if they have metal propellers and coolant is changed regularly.

I must agree, I had over 300K miles on my Diesel, and only one water pump change.
