Leak from top drivers window

Post

Hi guys

I have a leak coming through on my cabby. It seems to be seeping through above the drivers side top window seal.

I have changed the rubber seal three times, also put foam in the rubber seal, changed the frame above on the roof for a flatter version, adjusted the window higher and the door as was previously sagging. Also I should mention the roof sits pretty tight.

Now I'm completely clueless.

I'm thinking of putting a thin coat of black silicone. Does anyone have any other ideas? I saw Briano1234  link and he applied a silicon Permatex Black Ultra RTV which I'm thinking of buying. I have attached a picture you can see the water seeping through above the rubber seal :(

make sure that your seal at the a pillar and the b pillar are mated.
make sure that your "a" pillar seal is over the vent wing finger seal.

If you have a saggy door fix it.
After you fix it it may still need to have the glass adjusted.

Hey Briano1234

The following link doesn't work…

Top frame Seals:
http://volkswagenownersclub.com/vw/showthread.php/80306-Convertible-Top-Frame-Seals?p=605050#post605

This is where the leak is seeping through just above the rubber seal.

I've ordered Permatex Black Ultra RTV, as I feel if I apply one coat in the inside and outside this should block the flow of the rain coming in to the car….

If your "a" pillar seal doesn't overlap the door finger seal then the water gets in to the cabin, and isn't forced away.  I usually build up the overhang in layers as it strengthens the RTV… When you are placing the final coat you can smooth it with a rubber glove and spit on a finger.

There is also the J-hook seal that the gap between the frame mating to the receiver can leak,

Look through all the leak fixes I mention,,, One is sure to stop the flow.

IMG_20171214_152412.jpg Hey

Briano1234 I've applied a layer of sealant and will judge how it goes. However I do need to do the a pillars as it doesn't overlap but I had to do a tactical retreat as the weather is so cold over here in the UK :( lol

I also noticed I have a gap between the b pillar and the top window seal (see picture) although the surprisingly water doesnt seep through here but when I'm driving the wind infiltrates through this space. Any idea what I could do to sort this out?

there are foam end caps that you need, and you can move that by prying it out of the seal carrier and stretching it…

but the foam end caps are the bees knees.

1 on each end so for the sides I think you need at least 4/side

You can push the 2 seal closer together, they do slide along the metal holder but don't push them to far as a little plastic clip holds them down, try have a good look to see if 1 is further away from the end of the metal runner.
I had the same problem when replacing my roof and I just pushed them closer together.

after a good rain shower crack the roof open slightly, and look inside the top above where the metal seal carriers/ are fitted.  On my cab the hood itself had gone pourus and water was gettign in that way, then sitting in the top of the metal rubber seal retainers.

On my hood there was a real sewn joint between the middle and side sections, to waterproof this area a strip of material had been glued along the inside. On mine the glue had given up so it leaked, a new strip glued in place probably would have fixed it but I ended up with a new hood which was in better condition, this one had a fake moulded joint rather than a sewn one so no leaks possible

as above with the seal gap, its just a case of replace the foam pads on the ends of the metal strips then carefully pull either end of the rubber outwards from the metal carrier seal till the gap closes up. As Mark said theres a little plastic clip, this time of year it'll be extra cold and brittle so be very, very careful!
