Treating rust?

Post

I've read through the forum and picked few things up but wanted to know what the general best products to use for rust? I can see it popping up in small places over the body work on a cabby?

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

Since i started working in bodyshop…. and doing refurb..

check if rust is coming through paint from outside in or inside out…

1 Rub the area down with emerytape/grinder.

2 Treat area with some rust treatment liquid as instructions.

3 Add zinc primer(helps prevent rust) and then prep for repainting.

4 Paint.

Ok rust treatment, whoooo, I was thinking that since All Hallows Eve is approaching you were going to treat your rust… Usually acid, salt are treats for rust… :)

I usually grind, or sand, use a rust convertor, prime (depends on what type of metal, If I use Zinc…) then prime again, do body work if needed, then paint smooth, and clear.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

If the rust is coming through from the inside or back of the panel, then it's an area which will need to be cut out and new metal welded in. To find out, Poke it with a pointy thing like a screwdriver and if it's coming through from the back your pointy thing will go straight through.

If it's surface rust, creeping under the paint from the outside, it would have been caused by historical damage to the paint which exposed the metal, such as a scratch or a stone chip. Your pointy thing will not go through it no matter how hard you poke it. This sort of rust needs sanding/grinding out, followed by sanding, feather edging the paintwork around it.

Then you can treat any pitted areas with a rust converter, followed by a full paint refinish process, involving a respray of the complete panel.

Hope this helps 👍🏽
