Totally confused about what's under my bonnet

Post

I bought my car as 1.5 gl and as far as I was aware everything was standard. I recently gave the head a bit of a clean and uncovered a 16 and number stamped onto it. 20170102_145228.jpg 20170102_145219.jpg

Today out of curiosity I did a Google search of the number and it's coming back as a 1.6 gti head. This has made me wonder what else might not be standard. I've taken a couple of pics of the carburettor and would be very grateful if anyone can identify it for me, if you could tell me the size of vacuum pipe needed  as  replacement  that would be even better! Many thanks Tom. 20170102_145053.jpg 20170102_145121.jpg

Casting numbers don't generally mean that much. Don't take it as gospel. If it were a gti head it would have injector holes by th inlet manifold.

When I do a search on that number I get dozens of different Vw engines including a 2.5 litre Transporter so I doubt it's the ID number.

Vacuum hoses are usually a standard size so just go to an auto shop and ask for some in whatever length you need. Probably best to take the old one off and take it with you.

Sticking a 1.6 head on a 1.5 engine block does not increase the engine size to a 1.6, there should be a engine code just below cyinder 3, the 2 first letters is what the engine is.

If it is a Gti head it will give you a little better performance. :thumbs:You do find 1.6 engine blocks with 1.8 stamped on the back so I would not trust any of the part numbers stamped on the head and block.

I had the same thing on my GL, it was standard a 1.5 and the same 1.6 markings on the head - this is normal.
