Tap / knocking sound

Post

I've had the engine out of my 1.8t Mk1 to clean up the bay. I also did all the consumables, water pump etc and now when I turn it over I get this tapping or knocking sound.

I was pretty sure I kept the timing correct when I changed the belts but I am a beginner when it comes to engines so I'm really worried it's that. It does sound like it's coming from a single place though rather than right across the engine. More on the passenger side.

If any one has any ideas or suggestions that would be amazing.

Cheers,

It turns out my timing was wrong. The tensioner looks like its slipped and I'm a couple of teeth out.

I'd replaced the belt while the engine was out and by some huge stroke of luck, everything is easily accessible with the engine still in so it was't a big job to sort out

be thankful these guys aren't an interference engine.  :)

Diesels are a Different Critter if you are 2 teeth out, major ca-ca-will-occur.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

This is an AUM 20vT engine so it is an interference one. Nothing seems bent though so I am still thankful.

I'll be doing a compression test at some point soon to fully rule out any bent valves
