Can't get my Mk1 caddy 1.6 to fire up. Was running fine last week, now it cranks over but won't fire up. Checked the battery and it's fine, looking for suggestions

Turning over slow imo have you tried jumping it.

Next I would check for a spark I presume it’s a petrol. Take each plug out and crank over while carefully holding the plug near the body see what spark u get

Then check you have fuel getting to the carb, you may be able to smell it on the spark plugs if you have been cranking it over for some time.

Diesel or petrol?

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

I'd try charging the battery or trying with a boost from jump box / cables, it sounds like it's just cranking a bit slow to fire

Clean or replace your grounds Battery-to-Fame-to-Engine.  and Charge your battery.  If it is a Diesel, then I would also suspect the GP's.  Replace the number 4 and if it runs, then replace the other 3 then carry a spare and the 2 wrenches that you need to replace number 4 and you will never be stranded.

If the GP fuse ever blows, you can use a large paper clip to replace it till you get another or better yet buy a replacement and place in your glove box along with a stubby number 2 Phillips.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

All guessing, earth or grounds do not always sort the issues imo you need to be full in view of the issues that is my opinion

I believe it's a Diesel engine, you can just see the throttle cable going to the diesel injector pump.

Try and see if there's any water in the fuel filter by using the drain plug on the filter.
Try priming the fuel pump.

If it is Diesel, my experience with a 1.6D Caddy and 1.9D Polo is that the glow plugs all have to work to start without lots and lots of cranking in winter and the battery be in tip top condition.

If poss see if it will bump or tow start or with a 1sec squirt of sniff (Easy Start)
