Stainless steel inlet manifold bolts

Post

Hi folks, my inlet manifold bolts are rounding off. I’ve got them out but don’t fancy reusing them. Has anyone used stainless steel bolts without any issues? Any problems with electrolytic corrosion or tensile strength.
Cheers Steve.

I would go back and have gone back with the same replacement bolts grade 10, that I got from a local dealer….They are hex headed for a reason, however, I used never-seize on them going back.  SS bolts will also need to be Never-seized, and you will learn going forward that any time you use a steel bolt into a aluminum part to use Never-seize or on bolts subject to road grime…. Never-seize is your friend, or as yall call it Copper grease.

If you take one down to a good hardware store you can probably match it up.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Thank you Briano, I always use copper grease when I can. I would like to use genuine bolts but they are rare and expensive for mine. Two are m8x80 and four m8x50. I can get grade 10 but they tend to be black and rust quickly or bzp which rust nearly as fast that's why I was looking at stainless. I'm just a bit concerned whether there's any chance of bolts snapping due to expansion of the head and manifold.

Hey

Any bolt or nut that comes of my golf gets replaced with a good quality stainless hex head, the main reason not being rust but the good quality ones have a good balance of hardness and strength so the heads don't round off as easily and equally they are not so hard or soft they snap if you have to give them a bit of welly.

This includes the manifold - I replaced them about 4 weeks ago now and no problems yet

can't go wrong with copious copper grease as Briano says but expect the majority of it to boil and smoke out when you get it up to temp the first time

Thanks squid, think I'll go with the stainless then. They are cheap and easy to get hold of. I wouldn't use stainless on anything critical though such as suspension or brakes. Know what you mean about them not rounding off. I've never rounded off a stainless bolt yet!
