Speedometer cable and gear

Post

Hello all,

I'm looking at my speedometer cable or whats been left of one. I've read a bit about fitting the cable but unsure what I need to get.

I fear the worst, that the gear has fallen off the cable stub that was left behind and is now in the gear box, any help with checking that and getting it out?

Also what is the speedometer gear, red Z=15 or white Z=16 difference and how do I find out which I need?

Thanks

To know the Speedometer gear in side the cluster you have to know the teeth and usually it is red.

For the Transmission you have to know which tranny you have and the gear that it requires,  see:

Transmission Ratios. Lists the speedo gears by color:

To remove the gear with the cable you have to usually jack the car up both side of engine to get wheels off the ground.

Place the car in Reverse EBRAKE FULLY ON.
Loosen the spedometer keeper fully then as you are pulling it out spin the wheels back and forth so you can remove the gears from binding of the speedometer gear and it usually comes out clean. As in reverse, the movement of the wheels should allow the gear to back out of the location as it is a worm type of gear…

If it dropped off the cable, then you have to fist it out…I have heard of some folks overfilling the tranny and the gear will float to the top, but I know it is plastic, and that the Tranny will grind it up, but the issues I have seen and on BrokeVW.com, tiny bits of it can lodge in either the Selector forks, or bearings.. So it has to come out.

Briano,

Thanks for that, I'll check to see if there is one to fish out!

I looked at the A2 site, not sure if I'm reading it wrong or what my car has fitted is different, someone did ask did I have a different gearbox fitted or clutch when I first posted a picture of the engine bay on my project thread but I'm not sure, its what was fitted on purchase.

I have the sticker in the boot showing engine code EX trans code AEN.

How can i confirm that is the type of gearbox i have fitted, where is it marked?
