Smoke coming from the heater motor!

Post

Hi All

Got a H reg Cab, tucked her away for winter decided to take her out today to keep the battery changered.

On start clearly something wrong either with fueling or spark as only running on a couple of cylinders - missing a lot a and foot down and going no where really.

THEN noticed smoke coming into the cabin through the vents, popped the bonnet and smoke coming out the hole where the heater motor is. I can't see if it's coming from the motor or somewhere under it.

A. Do these go? Easy to change?
B. If it's not that what's under it that could be smoking?
C. I can't see this being related to the running issue?

I did have the heater on for a moment but even when off as I limped it Home it started smoking again?

Any ideas?

Thanks!

yes/no
ac or no ac.
year would be nice to know.

sweet smelling or acrid as in electrical.

Why?

Sweet smelling is a bad heater core.
Acrid is bad motor or wiring.

The smoke sounds familiar to me, I had the same problem a year ago and it was the bearings on the heater fan. They were tight and the motor was seizing up. I removed it, stripped it down and lubricated the bearings and it's been good ever since.  I did have to replace my heater matrix recently and it would be worth checking yours while it's apart.  I removed the fan from the scuttle but it is a pain in the ass to do and I ended up removing the wiper linkage and motor and it came out on the drivers side. Be prepared to swear a lot when removing and when reinstalling! Before removing though, take the cover off and see if the fan rotates freely. It may also be the resistor burnt out that smoked. Good luck, I hope you get it sorted.  Let us know if you need any tips!

Briano1234 thanks for the info buddy, no AC and 1990. Smell wise, tbh because the car was running bad and then I saw smoke I was in a bit of a fluster.  It wasn't an obvious anti freeze smell and wasn't a really strong burning smell. Think it's def motor or wiring.

Saulty thanks for this, really helpful. He's cleared quite a lot from the engine bay as it had a front end respray last year and there's nothing really around it so might help when trying to take it out. Smoke was coming from the hole it's mounted in as I thought it might be that resistor at first.
My squeaky bum moment made me not look as hard as I should have.

squeaky Bums here are called assfault.

Remove the cover and see if you can see wear it is smoking.

Dirty bearings cause the heater blowers to over draw current.

Wires on the side (passenger) of the heater box can brown and cause reduced current as well
