Post

Good evening
i have an 87 GTI cabriolet that has tarantula 13 inch wheels
i know they were never fitted to the cabriolet from factory
should the have spigot rings? They are loose on the hubs, obviously the bolts line up
Thanks again

That doesn't sound right, unless someone knows different I think all MK1 and MK2 Golfs and derivatives (Jetta, Caddy, Scricco etc) all had the same bore and PCD, see below. The only things that different were rim size 13/14/15 inch and offsets.

If its loose someones modified the hub or the wheel

Center Bore: 57.1 mm
PCD: 4x100
Wheel Fasteners: Lug bolts

That’s what I thought too.
I will take the wheels off and measure
all the drums and hubs are standard

how much wobbly are they? could it be that after 40yrs and dodgy fitting on spigots they have just become a little loose?
as above  centre bore should be  57.1mm when new, but id expect bigger due to refurbing and wear over the years.

They are the same fitment as standard wheels fitted to a cabriolet, I've got a 1988 GTi cabriolet and have fitted the 13 tarantula wheels from my Mk1 Scirocco to my Golf and they fit the same as the fitment as the 14 snowflakes my car came with. The tarantulas do run very close to the front brake callipers.

Are both front and rear wheels lose as could be lose hub nuts as rears drums can go a little lose.

Stripped threads on rear drums or front hubs from tyre fitters using a buzz gun to put the wheels on?

Any rubble from bearings then quiet when cornering?

Post up a picture of the wheel bolts and hubs as my be able to spot something not right with your car or wheels as they should not have spigots.

Yes something isn't adding up here.

Everything is 57.1. If they're vw wheels they'll be 57.1.

Another thing to watch for is that VW used different bolts (tapered and round shouldered) and different lengths for steels and alloys. This could cause problems  if they;ve been miss used and damaged the wheel bolt seating?

If so loose as to think may need spigot rings, then centers probably been machined out to fit something else,  if so spigot rings would probably sort it out

Rear hubs perfect but wheels look about 5mm too big?

Have they been machined, is there a step or enlarged all the way down?

I'll go against the grain here and say just bolt em on.

I've spent years running odd sized bores with no spigots, on low powered cars of course.

I even used to double stack spacers and run spigotless wheels…. Bad advice I know, but in all my years I've never encountered a problem.

I'm even running without spigots on my 20vt at the moment. .. doesn't bother me a bit.
