Removing rounded alternator allen bolt

Hi All,

We're trying to replace the alternator but the bottom Allen bolt is completely rounded off. Any tips or advance?

Hammer in a star socket or a larger Allen key

That, or bang a socket over it.

Hi All,

Thanks for your suggestions, the problem is the lack of room to get a drill or hammer in.

Anymore ideas?

How much room don't you have?

Picture?

You can remove the bracket which the alternator is fitted to as it's bolted to the engine block, I think there is 3 bolts you need to remove, you will have to remove a lot of stuff to get to all the bolts.
As you said there is no room to hammer a tool on as I had the same problem but I did not have to remove the alternator so I left it alone till I pulled the engine out then there was plenty room.
See if I can find a picture.

If you remove the upper cambelt cover that should give you a little more room and also allow you see what you are doing better

The bracket look like this, 1 bolt at the front of the engine block and 2 at the side of the engine block.

You can see the bracket on the engine here, you will need to remove the cambelt covers etc…
