Rear Fog Light Help

Post

Hopefully some of you can help me out. I have an 83 gti cabby with no power to the rear fog light. I've checked the bulb works and cleaned up the connections in the bulb holder. I followed the wiring to the boot and can see it earths on the rear lights and that the live must be this wire with the plug/ connector on
And found no power here either, I then checked the Fuse which seems to be fine but I replaced it anyway.
I've had a look on some other posts on here about the rear fog and see people saying that they're should be a relay in position 7 and by the looks of it I don't have one there? I also saw someone say trace the yellow/grey wire which I have found at the back of the Fuse box with a connector on but not attached to anything?

Can anyone help me out and point me in the right direction? Should I have a relay in position 7 and where does the yello/grey wire connect? And where do I go from here?

Cheers look forward to any. Replies

I'm not great with electric so can't be much help but just checking you are using the switch right….
headlights need to be on (main beam on just side lights) and ignition on position 2 (lights on dash) there is 2 positions on the fog light switch, 1st click is front fog lights (if ever fitted) and position 2 is the rear fog light.

Just in case it's a simple fix??

that grey/yellow wire plug you have in your hand needs to go to M/1 on the rear of the fusebox:

Sorry to bring this up I have an 88 cabriolet should the yellow grey cable at the rear of the fusebox plug into M1 ? I only ask as after I've re wired lots of terrible wiring my rear fog light isn't working' I do know that I've connected it inline with the other yellow grey as they both have connectors on them

if you connect it inline with the other plug of the same wire col,our your fogs wont work unless you fit a 53 relay in slot 7.

you only need the relay for cars with front fogs, for cars without you have it plugged into M/1. It works both ways just there is no need for a relay to power just the rear fog bulb, and without a relay the front H3 bulbs would end up a bit dim

Rear Fog Light Help

I’ve seen this a few times on these cabs.
Confirm you have 12V at the switch output.
Pop the bezel off and pop the switch out.
Operate the switch to check that’s ok.
Once you’ve confirmed all’s good there.
You’ll need to cut the wire coming from the out put of the switch and solder and heat shrink sleeve a new wire all the way back to the loom in the boot.
I think it was the grey/yellow one.

Sounds like a good opportunity to unplug one of the reversing lights, replace the bulb with a red one and splice the fog loom into that.

Then unbolt the cheap nasty, after thought of a fog light hanging off the back of the car

chortle, dont forget the fuse inline with the rear fog wire ;)

okmate: M/2 isnt right as it will go dead when main beams are on, you need it on M/1 which is live both dip and main beam :)

1985: did this on my cabrio as the fog light in my box of bits was too far gone plus it looks garbage as you say. was looking at post-golf/s1 light which is red tinted on that side but they were always expensive for what they were

rubjonny Posties are nice but I find the ginger on the corners more offensive than the white.
Ideally the full reds are the best option but I've never found a set.
I had a box of spare with mine so I tried the red tinting spray, it's not brilliant but far better looking, ended up using a red led bulb so it was that much brighter than the brake lights

I would be worried in placing a possible higher wattage bulb for a "fog" lamp as My Brother-in-law used the improper bulb in my Rabbit, and by the time my wife drove the 300 miles in the dark to get back home, she had melted the socket, and cracked the lense.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

the wattage you need is only the same as required for a brake light bulb so there is no issue, or if you use an LED bulb its way less than anything factory :)

grey/yellow is your fog light switch power input, it should be live with either the side or main lamps depending on the age of the car.

the black wire with nowhere to go is your fog relay trigger, once you hook that up you'll most likely be back in business. what year is your car?

ah, looked again I see its its actually a CE1 fusebox. I dont know why it has a ceramic fusebox relay on top of it…

so for ce1 without front fogs you simply put the female grey/yellow spade to M/1:

if you dig into your wiring loom a bit more you should find it, the grey/yellow wire you're looking for comes out the back of the fog light switch. its possible someone has put the entire ceramic fusebox fog wiring on top of the ce1 dash loom, it was always a seperate harness as some cars didnt need fogs at all.
