No power to fuel pump 1985 GLI

Post

I recently bought a non starting 1985 golf gli(cabriolet).

  Hi!

I have spark and the engine starts with starting fluid but i dont have power to the fuel pump or a fuel pump prime. The relay is clicking  when you turn the key and when cranking. My fuel pump relay is number 2 but the letter is upside down. I have changed the fuse and need tips on what to do now.
Is there one or two fuel pumps in these golfs?
And where does the wire from the puel pump under the passenger side go?
And behind all the relays which wire/wires go to the fuel pump?

Yes there are 2 Fuel pumps. One External one in-tank.
the fact that you are getting a click, tells me either you have a broken wire to the pumps, or bad Grounds.

If you haven't replaced your main frame to engine and frame to battery, It wouldn't hurt you test for a ground drop.

There is also the relay itself that may be bad, and to test if it is before the relay or after, you might want to jumper it out, or place the Horn relay in it position as a test.
If the relay runs the pumps all is good

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Hello again
Today i took my horn relay and put it in the fuel pump relay position. When i did this(the key wasnt turned) i could hear the fuel pumps running. When i turned the key and did the same thing, nothing.

I will order a new fuel pump relay but could this also have to do with the ignition lock? I am a bit confused

Fuel pump will run all the time with the horn relay in.

Your fuel pump relay may be bad, but give it a go first.
You have eliminated the wiring from the fuse panel to the pumps.

Get the correct relay.
see the last page to get the proper CIS Relay

If they still prime give it a go.

Now i have gotten a new relay and same issue, no prime or sound from the fuel pumps when cranking. I assume this could have something do the with the ignition lock? Or is there anything else that could stop power from going to the fuel pumps?
