New oil filler cap seal, now cap won't go on!

Post

At some point during the resto I have lost the rubber gasket that fits under the oil filler cap. Just bought a genuine VW replacement, part no 06A 103 483 D as per ETKA, but the rubber seems too thick & I cannot get the cap to fit now.

I thought I could open up the locating lugs on the cap a bit so they engaged in the opening, but no success.

Am I being stupid or is the seal wrong?

Cheers
Peter

that is a newer part number, might be it only works on newer oil cap?

the original part number is 059103487:

what oil cap is it that you have before you spend any more money though…

Cheers John, I went to TPS and they said they kept part number 059103487 in stock, so thought I'd pop up and get one.  Turns out it's actually a superceded part number, and what they supply is actually 06A 103 483 D.

The thickness of this rubber seal is 2.25mm, it just doesn't allow my original oil cap to fit as it's too thick.  So I've ordered some 1mm thick rubber gasket sheet and I'll make one.

No doubt I'll find the original one at some point when I start tidying up the garage !!  :banghead:
