Mk1 Webber carb' cutting out on Motorway

Help engine trouble

Right, new to this as I've just bought a 88 Golf clipper with a 32/34 Webber carb. Which has had a lot of fuel parts fitted,
fuel tank, fuel lines, carb rebuilt fuel pump fuel regulator and in line filters
all were going well until about 60 miles up the motorway and I lost power and the car spluttered to a halt. Left it ticketing over on side of mway checked to see fuel was flowing through line ok. Set off again and it did it again and then again about every 30-40 miles at 60-70 mph. Every time I would leave it 10-15mins before setting off.itdoes smell like it's running rich so not sure if carb is set up right, or it's a heat problem. Seems like it's flooding and cutting out. It's fine running around town etc. Just seems to do it at motorway speeds. Any advice or should I take it to a vwspecailist garage

Mine did this when I re instated the return to tank line… Try blanking it off (from the fuel separator bowl). Mine was OK around town and up to around 50 mph but Fuel was returning to the tank at speed instead of going to the carb… Effectively, the car was running out of petrol at speed…
If you do this, make sure you plug both ends of the return line. Or you may find, like I did, that when its parked facing down hill with a full tank, petrol puts out of the open end of the return line, all over your driveway. Ooopps.

Yeah taken it out today and it's fine around town but moment you open her up in 4th/5th over 4K start to cut out, lower revs worked fine.. So basically stop the fuel return then

I can't guarantee you success of course, but gotta be worth a try.  Test drive along a stretch of road that has somewhere safe to pull off onto if you still suffer the same. Mine is blanked off by inserting a bolt into the fuel return pipe leaving the separator bowl. Assuming it's long enough, cut a piece off the end of the pipe, reattach it to the bowl and plug it. Make sure the other end is out of the way of the alternator and belts etc… Good luck. Let us know how you get on…

I'll have a look at that. Think previous owner has put in line filters on both the fuel lines too. Both look clear so not a dirty fuel issue. I did wonder if the carbs not set up right.

Any luck yet?
I hope it works for you but it does seem weird that there are filters on the return line… This kinda suggested to me that whoever set it up, wasn't really sure of what they were doing. It could be prudent to take it to a garage for a simple tune up check

I have her booked in with a garage to give the engine a full going over. As I've got a couple of other issue that need resolving like the tempamental Rev counter and fuel gauge.

tempamental Rev counter and fuel gauge.

Well that is a easy fix.  Loose connectors on the cluster, or bad 10V stabilizer.

the Stabilizers list anywhere from 15-45 dollars over here on the VW sites.

When in fact they are a Fairchild KA-7810-ate  which retail for about .80 cents USD.

A lot of shops don't like electrical work, and they may tell you that a new cluster is warranted, (like you can buy new ones…)  But usually the issue is a ground wire on pin 2 is flakey, or a broken trace…..

I have the fix for those in the newbie section loog for my name the for the list.

So just be warned and informed.

One gauge bad Gauge or sender issue… Two gauges acting flakey,,, issue is in the cluster…..Usually

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

I had the exact same issue with a weber carb too.  The fuel was freezing at the jets.  Only was an issue on mway for half an hour plus.  I solved it both times by running a warm air duct from the exhaust manifold.  Had this on a Mk1 and on a mk3 escort CVH.

Well she back from garage and running like a peach. He's fitted a restricter into the fuel return so no more fuel starvation. Rebuilt carb as who ever fitted it didn't do it right, also they fitted fuel pump wrong and that was leaking.. I've been on motorway and given it some beans without a problem. Dash gauges are working most of time so leaving it. Gives car character lol plus don't fancy taking dash apart. Been on rolling road as its producing 90bhp so not bad for a 28 yr old car. Well happy.
