Mk1 linkage bushes now can't engage 1st or 2nd

Post

Hi, I changed the bushes on the vertical linkage bar. Put everything back together and now can’t select 1st or 2nd, I can get 3,4 and 5. I did loosen the pinch bolt but realised I didn’t need too so didn’t knowingly move it.

Any suggestions on what could be the problem or how I reset the linkage?

yes I have searched forum and all I can find is old posts referencing Haynes manuals and dead links to articles.

I know you have to rotate the splined shaft to adjust but not sure if that’s clockwise or anti, the posts I’ve seen don’t make it explicit.

Not sure if this helps, but I would disconnect the linkage and find 1st gear by moving the selecter rod by hand, (obviously with engine off) and that would indicate where the rods need to be adjusted to....

You did buy the correct ones for the transmission that you have, as there are 4spd ones and 5 spd ones the are different.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Similar to jazzy in the past I have disconnected everything, put the GB in reverse and have a glamorous assistant hold the gearstick in reverse position whilst reconnecting everything.

The problem with the Haynes/factory  mesurements are that they don't have 40 yrs of drooping engine mounts, worn bushings and compoents to factor in.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

I fiddled with the splined rod and had to try a few different positions til I got it working. Thx anyway
