Mk1 GTI on-board computer

no working

Hi there,

Just changed the steel water pipe and water header sensor on the car this weekend which was a success but on driving to work today had some issues.  This involved new earth connection to the rocker cover and new terminal on the water sensor on the block.

Initially the rev counter and level light came on when I turned the fan to 3 (not 1 or 2!) but since then this has settled and is a non issue on the way home - lose connection?

More worrying is that the trip computer now only reads the time and will not flick through the readings i.e. miles done etc. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Sounds as if you are still having phantom grounds.
Clean the Frame to battery and frame to engine/tranny connections.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

There is usually a Brown/white wire that terminates on the upper right corner stud of the rocker cover, from the same point a braided earth strap goes to the coil mounting bracket bolt which is the earth for the clocks.
If that's all there then I'd look to the actual connector on the clock it's self. It's the blue ribbon, I had all sorts of issues on mine.. But they were intermittent when I tapped the clock housing. I took the clocks out cleaned the copper contacts on the ribbon and put some electrical insulation tape over the plastic  nub the foil fits over, this when put back together padded the contacts out making a better contact with connector plug pins. Problem solved for me.

Chortle,

Thanks for the prompt response - really appreciated!

Brown/white wire that terminates on the upper right corner stud of the rocker cover - Done a re-connected :thumbs:from the same point a braided earth strap goes to the coil mounting bracket bolt which is the earth for the clocks - don't recall seeing this and will check. If its not there I assume this is a normal earth braided wire? Any photos ?

With regards to the back of the clock this may be worth a look afterwards as before only half the clock functions worked - top half where fine i.e. miles done etc but the bottom half MPG and temp never did. The MPG reading in the top centre between the Speedo and the rev counter never worked either - any ideas?

Briano I think you may be right regarding the rev counter going nuts when I turned on the fan which has sorted itself by now but I will do this to discount it anyway.

Thanks fellas really appreciated :thumbs:and I will let you know the outcome.   IMG_2648.JPG
