MK1 Golf GTi Inner Spot Lights stopped working

No working

Hi all,

Would like some assistance please.

My inner spot lights have stopped working. The bulbs are fine.

Last month they were working ok.

I noticed there is no current going to the bulbs when I flick the full beam.

I traced the wires to under the expansion tank and tested to find no current there either. It's the brown and yellow / white wires.

I traced to the fuse box and still no current.

I tested all the fuses and all are ok.

The full beams on the outer lights work fine, just not the inner lights.

Not sure if it is linked to a relay or not? Too many wires behind fuse box driving me mental.

Very confused, any help is much appreciated.

There are no relays involved, if the outers work, then there is a break in the wire from the outer to the inners.

The inners require a separate ground, then the high beam single wire is wired to the left or right main high beam

There are 4 fuses two for the highs and two for the lows.

You issue is a bad connection from the Main Beam High light and the bulb connector, or a bad ground.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Hi Briano,
Thanks for the feedback.
I don't believe the inners are connected to the outer full beams as the wiring for the inners runs to a connector under the expansion tank. Then from the connectors there is a brown and yellow/white wire going in to the interior fuse box. Totally separate wiring system.
Cheers.

The connection underneath the expansion tank is for the front fog lights, if you turn the ignition on, lights on and switch the fog light switch to position 1 then there should be power to the connection/ inner lights work?

Inner high beam lights are connected to main outer headlights, you may have fog lights for inner lights and not high beam lights?

Hi,
Thanks for the input. I can confirm that it still didn't work after setting fog to position 1 did not make a difference.
I don't believe my car was fitted with fogs when released from the factory.
The inner lights and grill I purchased were driving.lamps, not fog lamps.
When I wired it up a couple of months back, they used to work everytime I flicked to full beam, both inners and outers full beam work together.
There is just no supply to the wires.
I even removed all connectors from the fuse box, cleaned with contact spray and reconnected.
Very puzzled.
There is no supply from the fuse box either.

So i managed to resolve the issue by installing a new upgraded wiring harness for quad lamps which works straight of the battery through fuses and relays. Lights are definately much brighter than before.

The original yellow / white wire in question is still a mystery as it does not connect through to the fog light switch. Anyway case closed, will leave it at that.
