MK1 gearbox help

Post

so on my way back from a show my gearbox got stiff and then started grinding into gears eventually leaving me without first gear for the way home.

I checked the cable and it was fraying so i though it was stretching and swapped that out but no luck, still grinding.

I had a look around and people were saying to change the oil, did this and now it seems to start to grind when it gets warm. (i have filled put 2 liters of 80w90 Gear oil in, I think Mr Haynes says to put in 2.2 so i'm going to get some more and test tomorrow)

Anyone able to share some knowledge on this?

Edit: the clutch cable is adjusted all the way to the top, its a manual adjust cable on a 1.3

How old is the clutch?
As you state it is full up, so you either have a clutch issue, or a possible cracked actuation finger …..

When you go to change the clutch, I would suggest that you do the finger as well.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Not sure what gearbox is fitted to a 1.3 but this site is very helpful if it's fitted with a 020 gearbox.

Welcome to BrokeVW.com

As for oil changes on my 1.8 car with a 020 gearbox I can never get the full amount of oil recommended back in, the last gearbox I changed the oil for was off the car so I could even hold it up on a angle to drain all the old oil out and I could still only get in 1 and 3/4 liters of oil in to get it to MAX mark and the books says it takes 2 liters.

Many be worth checking the bulk head where the clutch cables goes through as these are prone to cracking as it's a very weak point, you can get a strengthening plate to stop this happening or repair a bulk head with, if you don't have a plate fitted FIT ONE NOW, they are £16 ish and saves a lot of work/welding if the cable pulls through.
They can be stuck on if the bulkhead is not damaged and cleaned.

They are also available on ebay and other places.
