Mk1 Campaign Dash Display / Clock / MFA Not Working - Help Please!!

Post

Hi All,

I recently purchased an '83 Mk1 Campaign GTi that is generally in good shape, but needs a little TLC.

One of the issues I am trying to solve is that the clock display is blank on the dash.

I have tried / tested the following to get it working, but to no avail: -

 - Checked the brown / white earth cable that runs to the cylinder head cover. I have changed the connector on the end to a new one and cleaned the nut & bolt it is held on by. I have also confirmed continuity from PIN 2 on the dash connector to the connection on the head, and it all tests ok.

 - Checked Fuse 3 that does the interior door light. This is fine and the interior light works fine when the door is opened and closed.

 - Wrapped tape around the plastic under where the mylar sits to pad it out for a snug connector connection on both the MFA and dash connectors.

 - Disconnected the battery and left it disconnected for a night and re-connected in the morning.

Everything else on the dash works fine, all the gauges and vacuum, the rev counter etc. all work fine.

Before I console myself to the fact that the display is dead, is there anything else anyone can recommend to check and do?

I have read about a reset you can do by holding down the MFA button while connecting the battery and turning the ignition on / off etc. I haven't tried this as you obviously need two people to do this bit, but would this help it work do you reckon?

According to the previous owner 'the clock was working until he tried to fix something with the radio by taking it out and doing something' but I don't know if this is true or he was bluffing to make it sound like a cheap fix! I've taken the radio out as I want to replace it and I can't see anything lose or obvious that would cause an issue. The 12V constant and ground for the radio are both fine when tested on the multimeter.

If anyone can help I would be extremely grateful!!

Cheers

check the red wire on pin 6 has permanent live for starters, should see 12v if you test between pins 6 and 2

Thanks for the reply rubjonny.

I've tested pins 6 and 2 and I get 12v across them. Everything on the clocks works fine apart from the MFA display.

I've bitten the bullet and bought another set of clocks which are apparently fully working, so will have to see what happens when they arrive!

Cheers

does sound liek a cluster issue then, possible worn out blue foil somewhere or a fault on the main circuit board inside, or lcd panel is just dead
