Mixture adjustment on Pierburg e2

Post

Hi all,

could anyone help, I am trying to get a 1.6 carb engine to idle, it seems to be running very rich as I am getting rough / lumpy idle and cutting out , plus black smoke from exhaust and petrol smell.
From all the google guides and you tube vids I can find ,  I have established the auto choke is working well, but I can’t find any info that I can understand relating to idle adjustments

its a Pierburg e2 carb

cheers!

There’s a set up guide in the how to section on the forum by member rubjohnny

Yeah ,
thanks Chorts,
I have been following that, an excellent information source.

So, I’ve changed the carb flange as it was starting to split but I don’t think it was leaking, and also I have changed all the vac pipes and the pull down unit which had given up the ghost.

The problem I seem to have is that when the engine is warm, the idle is too fast. The 3/4 unit is working fine, but the stud bit on the throttle control is a few mm away from the piston on the 3/4, and if I push it towards the piston  the idles drops to where it should be??? Ggrrr,,, I don’t understand why the throttle adjustment stud thingy and it’s arm is seemingly not dropping all the way to the 3/4 ???

Don't know the specifics, but if this has an automatic choke, then I have seen that mal-adjustment and cause similar issues on 2 and 4bbl Carbs.

If you disconnect the throttle cable do the butterfly's almost fully close?

Thanks for the reply, I’ve had enough for today, but, I had the car running for for about an hour, the idle speed did seem to come down to acceptable level in the end. I’ll get back on it tomorrow when the engine is cold again, I must admit I haven’t set the PDU to correct measurements yet.

One other thing, what is the thing on the front of the carb with two coolant hoses going to it? I suspect it has something to do with idle as well

I’ve been googling again so don’t answer that - it’s the “wax stat” !! I think that’s the problem!!

Remember that if you have an automatic choke, then you are going to see a Rev increase until the engine gets up to temp…

Vacuum leaks no matter how small effects these critters a lot.

The Dual coolant hoses are 2 fold one in and one out, to prevent carb icing in the winter and to stabilizing the emissions as the Carb is kept at a warmed state.

check out my guide and read it from top to bottom, check everything.

a happy 2e2 runs as well as a fuel injected car, proper operation is high rev from cold start to about 1.5krpm for a few seconds, then it drops to 900-1k rpm and stays there no matter what.

how long it revs for depends on how cold it is outside and the temperatur of the engine, but it should be no more than a few seconds.

if engine is running rich and idle is hanging for a long time I would suspect coolant channel in the inlet manifold has swollen shut, whcih blocks coolant flow to autochoke so it doesn't come off quick enough and also stops flow to waxstat so it cant control the idle for you properly

Thanks rubjonny
Great guide - car is now doing exactly as you describe, so I think it’s fixed!! Huzza!!!
I was expecting it to idle fast for time until warmed up but it runs like an injected car would !!
