Lifting a 1.6 GTi (EG) engine assembly

Post

Hi,

The 1.6 EG engine only has one lifting lug as far as I know, on the head.

When removing the engine i just removed the sump and used straps under the block and gearbox - for re-installation I'd prefer a better mechanical solution, to make it easier to make finer adjustments during fitting.

Would appreciate any advice from those that have re-fitted this set-up

Thanks
Dylan

In the Haynes, they all lift out the same. There is one hole cast into the head on the gearbox side, the other one is a metal plate that is bolted on in front of the alternator top mounting bar, into the head. You can just about see it here in this really bad picture!

It could be that over the years that has been lost. You'll probably need to fabricate a similar thing and bolt it into the head at that point.

if it is missing, big grade8 or 10 bolt a couple of nuts a couple of large washers, and piece of welded 1 inch chain.

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

When I put my engine back in on my own I found it easier to drop the engine block in from above then loosely bolt in the engine mount, I then slid the gearbox in from underneath and lifted it up to bolt onto the engine.
