How to wire headlight warning buzzer

Post

Hi All
Did a search and could only find oil system buzzers… There's a surprise! LOL

So I'd like to fit a warning buzzer in case I leave my lights on as I am just fitting a new battery due to killing the old one through (you've guessed it), leaving my lights on.

I have tried to fit it - it's only 2 wires, how hard can it be?
Hard it seems!

I can either get it on when the car is running, on when the lights are on, or on when everything is off! :'(If anyone can tell me exactly where to shove the two wires I'd be very grateful!!!

Thanks

Well finally I have found the answer to your question, a search that should have taken 2 minutes took 30 but that's my bad which is a bit like this fix. It doesn't work for everyone but most I believe.

Big thanks to satans_creation for this and all credit to him!

I tried it and I have three 292 relays but narda.
It could be the way my fuse box is layed out.
It's an LHD and I'm certainly no sparky!  O_o

Give it a go and all the best.

This is a weird one!

Works on my 93 cabby, but not the Borther in Laws 93 cabby.
Doesn't work on a 90 Caddy either!

Strange innit?

If you scroll through a bit further there is a guid on how to wire on in using the wires on the back of the holder that the 292 relay comes with if you chop it off a later car

Yep it pee'd me off big time.
Mines a LHD drive 1990 Cabby and I can see the fuse box has not been messed with.

I bought my relays from Spain x2 and Italy x1 so maybe it's a language problem!

huw169 what type of fuse box do you have?
early type with bullet fuses or later type with blade fuses?

Edit….. I've just clicked on the link and all the info is in there so don't worry about my question…..

If you don't have the 292 relay you can do it with a 12v buzzer and standard 5 pin relay.
You can just connect the buzzer - 12v to side lights and the -ve to the door switch with a diode but it will work all the time, engine running or not.
So by wiring directly to the door and side, wire the relay normally closed (30&87a) in between the side lights and buzzer, wire the relay to ignition so when the relay is energised the circuit between the buzzer is open, switch ignition off relay will be closed buzzer will work when door open and lights on. The diode prevents it working from the passenger door.

Many thanks to all for replying.
I considered myself to be reasonably good at car electrics, but this one was making me doubt my abilities. Glad to see that it is not as simple as I believed it to be, but VW already have a 'maybe' fix! LOL

I'll follow the guide posted, get a 292 and see how I get on.

Thanks again.

Relay 292 works in my car but for some reason it makes a continuing neeeeeeeeee sound when my blower fan is in the 0 position and makes a neeeee naaaaa neeeee naaaa sound when the blower fan is in position 1,2 or 3 even though there is no keys in the ignition and every thing else is switched off????

Very strange but at least it makes a noise.

"a neeeee naaaaa neeeee naaaa sound"
Did it come from a Ford Escort MK2 Police 🚨 car by chance? 🤔 😂👍🏼

Looks like you have a shared earth somewhere.

Clives does the same with the rear window heater. If that's on it makes the single tone.

I'd be satisfied with a cough like mine or a sound like a frog 🐸 when you squeeze it really hard but mine doesn't even give me a gurgling sound. 😕

But let's be honest if that is all I have to worry about then I can more than live with that and be thankful for it! 👍🏼

Well while I have seen that 292 thing, after I had my fix, I decided that what I did was a tad different but better for my Challenged folks that occasionally drive my cars.

I took the Instrument (console light) gray/blue wire and the parking light wires and cut them off the connector and soldered both of them to the heater switch power in wires.

When I leave my lights on, and turn off the ignition, all the lights on my  car are off.  There is no chance that I can leave my lights on.  It is painless, and the only issue that I have is that the console lights are on during the daytime,  which to me also means that my head light switch is on as well.

Well they must be something funny going on with my LHD fusebox or I've got 3 dead ones, which I find hard to believe to be honest! 🤔

Oh well I will just have to be always mindful of checking.
Don't miss what you've never had, apparently! 😉 👍🏼

I tried it in mine again. And used some light so I could see what I was doing. Oh yeah and I also put it in the right the relay space (cough, cough  :ninja:  ) and it all works.

Yay for me      Naaa, na, na naaaa, na! to golf Cabrio   :P
