How do you assemble rear shocks and springs?

Post

Need to swap my rear coilivers for shocks and springs. Very confused how they go together. If I put the nuts done up tight the spring top mount has a few inches of play. Between the washer beneath the top mount and the nut above it.

If I put a spacer in from the old xoilover it just makes it worse as it takes up the entire thread and doesn't slot down onto the top mount - it's too narrow to slot down onto the blank shaft after the thread.

Am I missing a part? It was meant to be a complete kit ready to fit! PXL_20220625_092805747.jpg PXL_20220625_092808737.jpg

I don't see your rubber bump stop or cup that is attached to the bottom of it. then on top of the cap there is a bushing and a one nut.

after that then as you mount it in the car there is a rubber bushing on the bottom and the top.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Thanks for the reply - I have the two bump stops one to go under the body and one in the boot that goes on top of the metal cup.

I think I'm missing the spacer sleeves which seem to be out of stock everywhere, which is super frustrating!

If you are in a pinch you could always buy the powerflex rear poly bushings…….they are yellow. The reason I'm suggesting that is they also come with two brand new sleeves in the package.

Hey stupid question but if you had coilovers on the car are the sleeves not on the top of the coilovers?

Thanks all, I ordered new spacer sleeves. Annoyingly the car had coilovers and the sleeves on those don't fit over the shaft on the new springs so I can't reuse it, which is super frustrating.

Hi Volks,

I have literally had the same problem this week. I swapped some terrible cheap coilovers for some standard shocks and slightly lower springs. The 2 rubber bushes that that go above and below the top mount don't generally come with the kits so you will have to order separately or just re-use the ones you already have which is what I did.  I had the same problem with the spacer sleeve from the old coilovers not fitting, and we had to drill out the inside slightly to make the inside diameter 1mm or so bigger, they then fitted. This was my only option as I was unable to source any new ones… The shocks and springs are all on now and the ride is so much better

Fingers crossed I sourced some ones off a scrap car, just waiting for them to arrive! Good to know I have options though if they're no good!
