Horrible Vibration

Post

Good Afternoon,

So I've notice ever since I got my 92 Cabrio I get this horrible vibration coming from the steering wheel/column, is there any way this can be prevented? The noise is unbearable. I've attached a video to show use.

Thank You

Can't see the video….

But vibration in the wheel is usually indicative of steering or alignment issue…  If you are sitting still and it is doing that then, I would look into a motor mount issue……

Now my question is (as you have a real Euro-Cabriolet RHD and not the LHD model that I am used to.) Is yours Powered Steering or Manual, and I have had issues with my early 90 one where the engine mounts were so bad that I had my Exhaust hitting the Rack occasionally… Which probably caused the Rack to over heat, and ruin the seals prematurely….effecting a replacement of the rack,,which in-it's self is the biggest pain in the posterior..and job that I loathed the most on my Cabriolet…..

Why, well on my Cabby
Jacking your car as high as it can go and supporting on Jack stands that have 8 inches of wood 4X4's under them (Yes I made 4 4X4 platforms of wood with plywood on top to support my Stands to get them higher),
Disconnecting the Linkages and rear tranny mount
Dropping the rear motor mount….
Removing the outer tie-rod off the spindle, and removing the inner tie-rods with the outers still attached,
Disconnecting the gear box coupler.
Soaking the studs and nuts on the Exhaust Down pipe, and having to remove it (down pipe), getting my Impact tool correctly aligned to power the 15 year old crusty nuts off.
Removing the Power steering fluid from the res
Loosening the Power steering rack mounts to access the hose fittings (use of impact lessens the chance of snapping a mounting stud off if you use a breaker bar..)
Loosening the Power steering hoses, and catching the dripping fluid in a 2 liter Baggie that I didn't Tie-wrap tight enough so that it later on when going back fell off drenching me in DexronIII….lesson learned that in the future I would secure it better….

Then finally removing my old rack to place the new one on… All the while upside down flat on your back on a "creeper" at the extreme reach of your arms length…while wearing googles that fog up, and are so covered in goo, road trash, that will get in your eyes mouth, ears and hair…no matter how well you have cleaned your under carriage prior and or how much "protection" you have used to prevent….  Was one Miserable thing to do….

And I should also mention that on my 81 manual rack with outer tie-rods that had Zirk fittings that you can grease, not like the newer ones that "never need" to be greased, you can get a small Vibration from those as well….as bad struts and strut mounts or inner tie-rods.. so yes you need to have it looked at, because it isn't "normal".  Not to mention that if your lower inner steering bushing has slid down the shaft so that your Steering wheel can move towards you about an inch or so, may need replacing and or re-positioning…

Did I miss anything?

Sorry I thought the video uploaded hopefully it's worked this time, I wouldn't know where to start if I was under the car I just about know what's going on inside the bay haha.

Mine is a LHD Fashionline hardly any Fashionline related stuff on the car everything's been changed 🤣 it seems like there's slight movement in the rack.

When the car idles it vibrates like mad as soon as I hold the steering wheel it stops.

Thanks again Briano

If someone has replaced  the engine mount on the timing belt end and put it in upside down it will cause this.
