Historic Vehicle Tax Exemption

Post

Hi everyone

My GTI should be eligible for MOT and road tax exemption this year, but I'm having problems.

The rule is that the vehicle should be manufactured before 1st Jan 1982 and this is where the problem comes.
According to my V5C my car was registered on 1st February 1982, however the VW website says "For vehicles built before 1982, these may have a ten-digit or less VIN number," which mine has. But the DVLA won't accept an extract from the VW website as proof of date of manufacture.

DVLA are asking for either:

An extract from the manufacturer/factory record - these will have the chassis number of the vehicle against the month and year of production*
Or An extract from the Glass Check Book. This is a guide to production dates which includes chassis numbers; these were only available to the motor trade via a subscription. Information from them can be obtained from most vehicle specialist clubs.
Not sure if anyone can help, or has been through the same thing.

Thanks in advance

I think you can contact VW head office in Milton Keynes and you can pay to have a copy of the cars birth certificate which I believe the DVLA will accept.

Other option is wait another year then apply for free road tax etc.

I just waited another year when my Mk1 Scirocco became an Historic vehicle.

There was a thread on this subject a couple of months ago so have a search.

1988 Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet 1.8cc DX, K-jet. Daily drive. 317,000 miles and counting
1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

I recently contacted VW MK and although my car was registered 01/08/81 it was in fact built 19/01/81. DVLA rang me and my car was amended online for MOT exemption. I've just received my Historic V5c. All sorted now.  MOT and Tax exemption does not happen when it's 40 which would be a lot simpler if it were.

Thanks all

I'll be on to VW MK on Monday.

As my car was registered on 01/02/82 it's got to be an 81 car.

Thanks again

Bill

Who do you ask for/talk to? Did you phone or email? I can imagine phoning and getting someone who has no idea what I'm on about!

I got it slightly wrong in my post, a build date before Jan 1st is the date they go by for tax exemption the following April but if the car was registered before 8th they will give you the benefit of the doubt that it must have been built before the 1st
DVLA's site isn't difficult to understand but a ludicrous way for determining the date of tax exemption.

As you said, very helpful lady at vw UK. My dating certificate is in the post to me already. That's about a week and half turnaround. Fingers crossed it says pre Jan 83!
Thanks for the info Vic.
