Is there any thing left of the bolt sticking out?

Spray some penetration oil on what's left.
You can either weld another bolt onto the end.
Cut a slot in the stud (Dremel type tool) and use a screw driver to unscrew it.
Drill the remains out and re cut the thread and possibly use a bigger bolt.

Be carful putting the bolts back in at the gearbox end as it's very easy to screw them in on an angle and cross thread the hole.
Some did mention using allen key head bolts and an allen key with a ball tip so you can get to the end easily on the angle.

Thanks Mark.

They have snapped flush with the casing.

I will try drilling out and to a bigger size and retapping with bigger bolt.

Thanks for the tip regarding the gearbox side - I used a wobbly connector and managed to get them but thought I had better be careful when putting back in.

Get a good quality drill and bit.. drill and tap. Could also go slightly bigger and fit helicoil if you go off centre

A good quality centre punch helps to make sure you are going in the middle.

When I fitted my new sump I fitted the bolts at the gearbox end with out the sump so I knew the angle they should be when going straight in, I then held the sump up and re fitted the 2 gearbox end bolts making sure they are going in same angle as before (it took several attempts to get them in right) then I fitted the other bolts around the sump.

I did try fitting the sump then attempting the 2 bolts by the gearbox but I could not get them in right. I bought a Febi sump and it did seem to be missing a little cut out which the original VW sump had so I think that was why I was having a little trouble fitting it, 1 hour latter it was fitted so do be patient, you may be lucky and they fit in straight 1st time.

Brilliant, thanks for all your help chaps.

Mission accomplished :) drilled the bolts out and re-tapped - in between trips back inside to defrost.
