Headliner which to buy

Post

So I have booked my baby into the body shop for an Easter paint job. Glass out and want to take the opportunity to replace the ripped roof lining. Seen on eBay heritage selling a kit for £110. Is it any good?  Are there good ones for less?  Really need to keep costs tight as spending 2.5 k on paint and can't afford much else to be honest. Any guidance welcome.

Thank you. Never fitted one so see if the painters will but doubt it so wish me luck. May be at Stratford without a roof lining. I will be in the shiny black golf with no windows and swearing a lot covered in spray on glue

Done this twice in my car with a sunroof and after without a sunroof and it was an absolute bar steward to do. I'd rather take the engine and box outs the car with I've done many times than fit a headline, if you gonna diy get a mate to help and it'll take a day to do it

Ok thanks for the advice. In your opinion how long to fit just the top piece as the glass will be out already so 'just' fit the main bit or does the glass need to stay out for the a b and c pillar pieces?  It has an aftermarket sunroof also so added challenge I guess of fitting first the cutting after to fit that piece.

I paid a trimmers to make and fit one in my Mk1 Scirocco, he also re trimmed and fitted my Webasto roof, re fitted the A and B piller trims, I even had a choice of colours and finish. It was about £200 all in, took him a weekend.

I took the car in with no windows and the Webasto in bits and in  the boot.

Old headliner was ripped and torn.

New headliner.

New roof.

I found a "1 man band" trimmers who works from his home so no overheads. He also re trims car seats, motor bike seats etc. He's been doing it for years and is not far from where I live in Somerset.

I could not work out how to remove the Webasto roof so I cut it off as I needed to remove the rust around the hole and check the wood put in the roof was ok.

So I watch a couple of YouTube videos today and although on big old American cars I guess the constructions is the same. I am now in two minds what to do. It looks the type of job I could do but if I wrinkle it or get the pillar trims on pizz a bit the will regret it. Is you one man band still at it Birmingham the Somerset is quite a nice run for me in the golf and could get a ice cream and donkey ride at Weston while I'm down. got a quote for a local trimers and it was just shy of £400. So I have a choice down £100 and risk it or potentially not be happy with it and end up spending £500. Do I have 8 hours to spare in May when I get her from the pain shop to fit it myself with mates to call on for the tricky bits. Mmmmm. By the way that job looks absolutely mint on yours.

Second question is there any edg eclips when fitting or is it just bows and glued edges using aperture trims and window seals.

I took my car to him with no windows and no interior, I had just had it resprayed so I had to get it to him on the back of a transporter so I guess that's why it's a better price, I then had to get the glass etc back in my self.
If you do it yourself will need lots and lots of bulldog clips to hold the liner on around the windows while the glue sets, you will need to use high heat glue.
Also found this from the Scirocco register.

Aftermarket sunroof . Put the hole in for that last night so completely fitted now. Original insulation under the head liner. A B and C pillars straight to the bodywork. The kit comes with a slightly different B pillar arrangement that runs under the rear qtr glass to finish the inside a little better originally this was just paint. Look good I think though as my car is black.

Thanks. Newton commercials it's a great kit also got the spay glue from them. Comes with some trim pieces to help hold it in place as well. Look at my project page as I put some more info on there.
