I bought a part build project, a 1983 tin top gti 1.8. It came with a new fuel tank (old one not there) which I tried to install yesterday but couldn’t.
When I try fitting the straps, they don’t go on the threaded bolts too far, only about halfway down, are the straps (bolt end, not hook) supposed to tighten up and meet the body underside? Or is it acceptable to just tighten up until there is no more movement of the tank?
Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.
many thanks
Brett

It’s not about how far the nuts do up, The tank needs to fit snug and tight, and you’re done.

Thank you, I was thinking it was the wrong tank because I still had 5-10mm left on the threaded portion. I thought the strap had to be up against the underside so had the tank in and out 3 times yesterday! Thanks for your advice.

No worries. If I was doing it I would put everything in place with fixings loosely, ie filler neck, hoses, wiring etc.

That is exactly what I was doing which then became a pain with me thinking the straps had to be done up until touching the underside. Once again thank you.

Under the straps on mine were felt that stopped the tank vibration and the straps are flat on the bottom and tight.
I have added some rubber/felt to the top of the tank to stop and vibrations and the straps are tight up against the underside of the tank. My only worry was the strap only tightened up to about half way down the threaded portion, but as a reply suggests above they don't need to be tightened all the way. Many thanks for your reply.

What do you use for the heat shield? Can you use heat reflective tape?
I have the original heat shield on there.

Is the new felt/rubber you put on the top of tank thicker than the original stuff?
I've put some thinner sponge on there.
