Front wishbones. Should I paint/ powder coat or replace with new?

Post

I need to remove one of my wishbones to carry out a repair to the mount and thought I might as well replace the bushes etc on the wishbones and anti roll bar. All these parts need a coat of paint and I wondered if I'm better off keeping the original wishbones and painting them or replacing with new.
I've heard stories that the originals are much better than Febi ones but wondered what other people thought.
Does anyone know roughly how much powder coating would cost on two wishbones, brackets and anti roll bar?
Cheers.

Wheel powder coating costs about £20 per wheel if that helps you estimate.

Powder coating should not be too expensive for what you're doing.  I think I paid £80 to have wishbones, back axle, brake drums and fuel tank powder coated, so would be surprised if you were quoted more than £50 for the lot.

as long as they're solid i would try to keep the wishbones original, you know they're the best quality then

I painted mine with some black paint.
Cheap and easy.

To me powered coating while nice, I wouldn't do it on a part that can get bent from a curbing or pot hole from hades.

I would suggest using a good quality polyurethane paint and a couple of coats of clear over it.

be warned that it isn't unusual for a new one to be bent out of the box.  I had a daughter curb one of mine and the replacement was fighting me for 3 hours I fought the long bolt… it looked square, and until I got a real square tool out to check boy I felt stupid.  Got one locally, and had it fixed in 30 minutes…(including installing ball joint.)  when placed ontop of the new part it was really easy to see the tweaked bits.

So before I would powder coat, I would test fit it first.
The quality of parts seems to be diminishing…

+1 always check new parts. I know someone who had one with the rear pivot pin welded 10+mm out of position…

Just putting it out there but febi ones are available new for about £20 but that’s just the bare arm

Thanks for the comments, as one of the wishbones was bent slightly I decided to replace with Febi for now but I will source a genuine item when funds permit and get them shot blasted etc when the time comes.
As usual, the jobs I've been doing have opened cans of worms and costs are starting to go through the roof but I've had the anti roll bar and wishbone brackets coated.

Febi ones I used are fine, the paint is a little thin in places so I did touch mine up before fitting them to stop them rusting.
